Treasury Board and Finance, Edmonton – Responsible for budget planning, financial management and economic analysis, as well as the administration of tax and revenue programs.

The Economics and Fiscal Policy Division plays an integral role in the development of Alberta’s fiscal strategy. The division is responsible for the development, interpretation and analysis of economic, fiscal and statistical data to support policy development and decision-making within the Government of Alberta.

Role Responsibilities

Shape Alberta’s Economic Future as a Fiscal Policy Intern: Empower Change, Drive Growth!

Are you passionate about economic research and long-term fiscal sustainability? Are you excited to dive into data and derive meaningful insights to inform policy decisions? Do you want to contribute to provincial budget preparation and apply your creativity and critical thinking skills to policy development? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you!

The Intern will be provided with an opportunity to learn and gain a broad understanding of the functions and responsibilities of branches within the Economics and Fiscal Policy (EFP) Division, and will participate in, and be responsible for, tasks and projects that contribute to the work and functions performed by the division.

Over 24 months, the Intern will be given a wide exposure to economic analysis and forecasting, policy development and analysis, federal and provincial fiscal relations, the legislative and government decision-making process, application of specific legislation, provincial fiscal management and reporting, and the production of demographic and social statistics.

The Intern will rotate between four branches and is expected to gain the following knowledge:

  • availability of data and its appropriate uses and limitations.
  • the priority policies of the government and the various branches' roles in ministry and cross-government initiatives.
  • Alberta's fiscal framework and key economic and demographic drivers/trends in the province, including important industry sectors and variables that impact the province; and
  • the responsibilities of various levels of government, their relationships and the province's positions on major issues.

Qualifications

A recent degree in Economics, Finance, Law, Public Administration or related field.

Preference will be given to individuals with a master’s degree in economics.
No previous work experience is required for this position.

Strong written and oral communications skills with the ability to communicate highly technical issues in simple (non-technical), clear language is required.

The intern must also possess strong interpersonal skills to facilitate working with others to meet divisional duties and responsibilities.

Hours of Work: 36.25 Hours per week

This is a two-year temporary full-time position.

  • Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening.
