Firefighter Examination Registration

The City of Johnson City invites you to register for the Firefighter Examination and start your career as a Johnson City Firefighter. Anyone interested in working for the City of Johnson City Fire Department, must meet the minimum requirements for the position and pass the testing process. The information provided will remain on file for a period of one year.

Johnson City Fire Department Firefighter Examination Registration Information.

Registration dates 18 March 2026- 1 May 2026

Requirements for registering:

18 years of age by May 16, 2026, high school graduate or GED, physically able to perform the duties of a firefighter trainee as defined by the City of Johnson City and not have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude other than a minor traffic violation. Applicants must possess a valid drivers' license with NO suspensions or revocations within the past 24 cumulative months.

Written and Physical Ability Tests will be held on Saturday, May 16 The Written test will begin promptly at 9:00 AM at JCFD fire training complex- 2830 W. Walnut St, Johnson City, TN The Physical Ability Test time will be scheduled after registration is received and will take place at Fire Station 3- 505 E Main Street, Johnson City, TN. No late entries will be permitted to either test. Candidates should bring valid ID to each test.

Registration will not be accepted and returned if any of the following documents are missing.

Documents required to register for the exam:

- Release & Waiver Form (print from Release Waiver Form - 2026.pdf

- Birth Certificate;

- High School Diploma/GED or Transcript with Graduation Date;

- Drivers' License;

- Social Security Card;

- College/University Diploma (if applicable);

- Certification from TN State Fire School (if applicable);

- EMT Certification (A or B) (if applicable);

- DD-214 for Veterans Credit (if applicable).

When Human Resources receives your registration documents, an exam packet will be emailed to you. It will include the date and time of the exam and physical ability. If hired, any candidate who possess an active Fire Fighter I & II certification from a validated Fire Service Training Program (verified by the Johnson City Fire Department) and a current valid Tennessee or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Licensure will begin employment at the rank of Firefighter. Documented evidence of the training level must be provided prior to the closing of the application period and is subject to verification by the Human Resources department.
