Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain continuous patrols of all designated areas, paying close attention to potential fire hazards, ignition sources, and unsafe conditions.
  • Detect and report any signs of fire, smoke, heat, chemical release, or hazardous conditions immediately (via radio, phone, or direct notification to emergency services and on-site management).
  • Keep a detailed fire watch log, recording patrol times, observations, any corrective or mitigative actions taken, and shift hand-over notes.
  • Ensure clear and unobstructed access to all fire protection equipment, exits, egress routes and means of egress at all times.
  • Communicate effectively with on-site personnel, contractors, emergency responders, and client representatives to ensure a rapid and coordinated response if a fire or unsafe condition occurs.
  • Remain on duty at all times for the duration of the impairment or delay in protection system function — no other duties shall interfere with the primary fire watch responsibilities.
  • Conduct basic equipment readiness checks (e.g., fire extinguishers, radios, flashlights/PPE) at shift start and prior to patrols.
  • Assist in the orderly evacuation of the premises when necessary, following established emergency action plans, and coordinate with clients/contractors and first responders.
  • Notify management immediately when the fire protection system is restored or when the fire watch can be terminated per fire department or Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) directive.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in fire safety, security, emergency response, or related field preferred.
  • Ability to remain alert and attentive during extended shifts.
  • Knowledge of basic fire prevention practices, egress/egress route concepts, and emergency procedures.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Must be dependable, professional, and capable of working independently and in adverse/outdoor conditions (standing/walking for prolonged periods, variable weather, construction sites).
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable local transportation.
  • Must pass background screening, drug-testing, and any client-site specific security or access requirements.
