Fire Safety Specialist - Environmental Health and SafetyTo perform inspections and maintenance on fire detection and suppression systems in accordance with applicable UMMC policies and procedures and state and federal regulations and standards. To provide guidance and training to UMMC personnel concerning safety procedures and the proper use of fire suppression equipment.
Education and Experience Required:
Degree (Associate's or Bachelor's) and two (2) years' work experience in fire safety, general safety compliance, or emergency management
Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:
HAZWOPER certification required post-hire within one year
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree (Associate's or Bachelor's) in Fire Science, Fire Safety Engineering, Occupational Safety, or Emergency Management. CFI-I certification
Knowledge of federal, state, and local fire regulations and protocols. Knowledge of fire sprinkler systems, wet/dry chemical systems, and suppression systems. Skills in performing safety inspections on fire detection and suppression systems and ensuring compliance with applicable safety codes and regulations. Classroom instructional and hands-on training skills. The ability to work in or around hazardous conditions such as exposure to flames, chemicals, and biological agents (required to wear personnel protective equipment). The ability to communicate effectively and react calmly in emergency situations. The ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare and/or present reports.

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, frequent working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, frequent driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more).
