Fire Safety Inspector-A (11)
This position serves as a senior Fire Safety Inspector conducting complex fire safety and occupational safety responsibilities in regard to inspections of correctional facilities within the Michigan Department of Corrections, ensuring they are in compliance with the applicable fire/occupational safety codes and standards and various state laws, rules, and regulations within assigned geographic region. At the advanced level, this position reviews construction plans of new and existing structures to determine compliance with applicable state fire safety laws and rules. This position oversees and implements the facilities Fire and Safety Program for the facilities under their jurisdiction, serves as a technical resource on all fire safety and occupational safety issues, and provides training on all fire safety and occupational safety topics.
This position is a recognized resource for the following facilities: Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility (IBC), Michigan Reformatory (RMI), Ionia Correctional Facility (ICF), Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility (MTU), and Ionia regional buildings.
Fire Safety Inspector-E (9-10)
This position reports directly to the Southern Fire Safety Supervisor 12 and in learning capacity oversees and implements the Facilities Fire and Safety Program for the facilities under their jurisdiction as assigned by the Southern Fire Safety Supervisor 12. The position will ensure that designated facilities in the Region are in compliance with MDOC Fire Safety and Occupational Safety operating procedures and policies regarding, state laws, rules, and regulations. This position is responsible for the most complex monthly Fire and Safety Inspections at assigned CFA and FOA Facilities in the geographical area.

Fire Safety Inspector 9
Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.
Fire Safety Inspector E10 and 11
Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school and successful completion of courses or continuing education credits for the Michigan Certified Fire Inspector program or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Certified Inspector I credentials.
Fire Safety Inspector 9
Three years of experience as a fire fighter, law enforcement officer, or corrections officer.
Fire Safety Inspector E10
Two years of experience equivalent to a Fire Safety Inspector 9.
Fire Safety Inspector 11
Three years of experience equivalent to a Fire Safety Inspector, including one year equivalent to a Fire Safety Inspector E10.
Fire Safety Inspector 9
One year of full-time experience conducting inspections with a municipal fire department, Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs or Department of Corrections, or in the building trades (licensed electrical inspector, safety inspector, plumbing inspector, construction inspector, etc.) may be substituted for the experience requirement.
An associate's degree in fire science or fire technology may be substituted for two years of fire fighter experience.
Continuing certification as a Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Certified Inspector. MIOSHA Level One Certification through the MIOSHA Training Institute.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.

Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.
