Summary

Fire and Rescue Recruit is an entry-level position for work within the Fire and Rescue Department for the County of Stafford. Selected applicants are enrolled in the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department's Recruit Academy for training in firefighting methods, emergency medical services, rescue techniques, emergency vehicle operations, fire prevention practices, salvage operations, public relations and education, physical fitness and associated topics to prepare for full-time field operations. After successful completion of the Recruit Academy and probationary period, employees are eligible for promotion to the position of Firefighter/EMT. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Training Academy Cadre personnel, under the direction of the Chief Training Officer.

Examples of duties

Successfully participate and complete the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department Recruit Academy.

Successful completion of the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department Recruit Academy requires maintaining an 80% cumulative grade point average (GPA) throughout the duration of the Recruit Academy. Cumulative GPA is derived from evaluation of physical fitness, conduct, and written and practical testing of associated curriculum.

Operate within the constraints of the Recruit Academy guidelines and maintain the Recruit Academy Honor Code.

Successful completion of the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department's Work Performance Exam (WPE) is required prior to the completion of the Recruit Academy.

Upon completion of the academy, Recruits will be assigned to field operations. Personnel assigned to field operations with the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department will be required to perform a large variety of tasks. These tasks are very diverse and may include: rescue of victims, firefighting activities, emergency medical services, fire prevention, station and apparatus inspection and maintenance, apparatus and equipment operation, hazardous materials containment, physical training, training sessions, continuing education, and community service.

Fire and Rescue Recruits perform various related tasks as required.

Qualifications

Learn and apply firefighting techniques and procedures;

Demonstrate mechanical aptitude as required in the operation of firefighting equipment;

Demonstrate physical aptitude;

Understand and follow written and oral directions promptly and accurately;

Perform heavy lifting and physical maneuvering;

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;

Demonstrate continuous effort to become more proficient in general firefighting duties, improving operations, decreasing turnout times, streamlining work processes, improving personal physical fitness and working cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years of age prior to application;
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent;
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Employment eligibility is contingent upon an acceptable driving record, based upon the regulations of the County of Stafford.

From pre-colonial America to modern-day, Stafford County has a rich history associated with significant events and people in our nation’s history.

Established in 1664, Stafford is perhaps most famously known as the boyhood home of George Washington. Stafford was particularly affected by the Civil War, The Battle of Aquia Creek took place in the County in 1861. During the duration of the conflict, some 100,000 United States and Confederate troops occupied the County. The conclusion of the Civil War represented a time of reconstruction.

Stafford remained mostly a rural community until the construction of Interstate 95 in the late 1960s. Since that time, Stafford has experienced a population boom. With a 2018 population of 149,110, Stafford is now the 3rd fastest growing County in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with populations over 25,000. Stafford is located between the major commuting centers of Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia. According to a 2018 study by Weldon Cooper, an estimated 38,000 County residents commute out of County for employment, compared to an estimated 22,000 who commute in. Approximately 10,000 people live and work within Stafford County.
