  • Conduct fire hazard analyses, fire system inspections, safety audits, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Review and approve fire protection system plans, including sprinkler systems, fire alarms, and suppression systems. Perform technical reviews of shop drawings, hydraulic calculations, and other relevant submittals.
  • Conduct fire protection assessments for Fermilab buildings, systems, laboratories, and support testing and maintenance of fire protection systems.
  • Perform risk analyses for experimental projects and provide engineering support for new construction and renovations.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and construction teams to integrate fire protection requirements into facility designs.
  • Manage Fermilab’s hot work program and review operational readiness for high-risk activities, such as the use of flammable or hazardous materials.
  • Conduct NFPA/ICC code reviews to ensure compliance with life safety standards.
  • Perform building walkdowns to assess compliance with Department of Energy (DOE) fire safety requirements.
  • Scope technical tasks, identify creative solutions to assigned problems, and develop fire protection strategies with supervisory guidance.
  • Incorporate engineering and scientific best practices into problem-solving and project planning, including managing technical challenges, special materials, or difficult oversight requirements.
  • Carry out development and qualification programs to improve fire protection processes and reduce future risks.
  • Develop alternate solutions to existing fire protection challenges and prepare detailed analyses to determine optimal strategies.
  • Evaluate project proposals and provide recommendations based on fire protection requirements.
  • Prepare manuals, reports, and other documents to support and publicize technical fire protection efforts.
  • Demonstrate creative problem-solving and technical expertise through engineering reports or technical papers.

Experienced Fire Protection Engineers should be able to:

  • Build and maintain relationships with coworkers across various disciplines, including operations, maintenance, construction, and safety teams.
  • Perform tasks individually or as part of multidisciplinary teams, driving work tasks to completion.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams on fire protection projects, coordinating efforts between different groups.
  • Manage time effectively, balancing multiple projects, documents, and tasks simultaneously.
  • Communicate complex fire protection topics clearly, tailoring the language to fit the audience.
  • Originate and edit written technical documents, including fire protection reports and specifications.

Essential Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable engineering discipline (e.g., Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Structural Engineering) from an ABET-accredited institution with a minimum of 4 years of engineering experience, or a Master’s or PhD from an ABET-accredited institution with at least 2 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of NFPA codes (such as NFPA 13, 25, 30, 72, and 101) and international fire and building codes.
  • Experience in fire system design, maintenance, and inspection, including automatic sprinkler systems, fire alarms, and suppression systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively across disciplines.

Pre-Employment Screening:

Drug-Free Workplace & Pre-Employment Screening

Fermilab is dedicated to fostering a safe, productive and drug-free environment. An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check and drug screening.

HSPD-12

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a federal background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws. Failure to obtain or maintain such government access authorization could result in the withdrawal of a job offer or future termination of employment.

Foreign Government Sponsored Activities

Fermilab employees, and certain guest researchers and contractors, are subject to particular restrictions related to participation in Foreign Government Sponsored or Affiliated Activities, as defined and detailed in United States Department of Energy Order 486.1A. Such individuals will be asked to disclose any participation for review by Fermilab's Office of General Counsel.

REAL-ID Requirement for access to Fermilab Campus

Fermilab requires all members of the public to produce a REAL-ID, or equivalent, to access the Fermilab Campus for interviews or career events. A list of acceptable forms of ID can be found here: https://get-connected.fnal.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/REALID-Documents.pdf. If a candidate is selected for an interview but does not possess any of the equivalent documents, we may schedule a virtual interview.
