Job Description

The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are developing technology to increase tunneling speed and reduce costs by a factor of 10 or more, with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.

We are seeking a licensed Fire Life Safety Engineer to own the design and stamping of fire protection and life safety systems for our Loop tunnel projects in Las Vegas and Nashville. This role will focus on developing code-compliant fire and life safety designs for complex underground transit environments, stamping engineering drawings, and ensuring systems meet NFPA, local AHJ, and project-specific requirements as we scale.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering design of fire detection, alarm, suppression, standpipe, and emergency communication systems for tunnel and station environments.
  • Stamp and seal fire protection and life safety drawings as a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Ensure all designs comply with NFPA 502 (and related codes), local AHJ requirements, and The Boring Company’s project standards.
  • Coordinate with internal engineering, construction, and operations teams to integrate fire/life safety systems into overall tunnel design and construction packages.
  • Interface with AHJs, fire marshals, and third-party reviewers during design review, permitting, and acceptance processes.
  • Develop and maintain company design standards, specifications, and calculation methodologies for fire/life safety systems in tunnel applications.
  • Support system commissioning, performance verification, and resolution of design-related field issues.
  • Evaluate emerging risks (including EV battery hazards) and apply performance-based design approaches where appropriate.
  • Continuously improve design efficiency, reliability, and constructability of fire/life safety systems as projects scale.

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license with the ability to stamp fire protection drawings (Nevada and/or Tennessee preferred; ability to obtain additional state licenses a plus).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience designing fire protection and life safety systems, with direct experience stamping drawings.
  • Strong working knowledge of NFPA 502, NFPA 72, NFPA 13/14, and related codes applicable to tunnels and underground transit.
  • Experience designing fire alarm, detection, suppression, and emergency communication systems.
  • Ability to work onsite in Las Vegas or Nashville.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior design experience on tunnel, transit, or large-scale underground infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with Siemens (or equivalent) fire alarm systems.
  • Experience with performance-based fire safety design and EV battery fire considerations.
  • NICET certification in Fire Alarm Systems or Water-Based Systems.
  • Previous coordination with AHJs on complex or novel infrastructure projects.

About The Boring Company

To solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic, roads must go 3D, which means either flying cars or tunnels. Unlike flying cars, tunnels are weatherproof, out of sight and won't fall on your head. A large network of tunnels many levels deep would fix congestion in any city, no matter how large it grew (just keep adding levels). The key to making this work is increasing tunneling speed and dropping costs by a factor of 10 or more – this is the goal of The Boring Company. Fast to dig, low cost tunnels would also make Hyperloop adoption viable and enable rapid transit across densely populated regions, enabling travel from New York to Washington DC in less than 30 minutes.
