Job Description

This position supports the Airbus Mobile Manufacturing Site facility in Mobile, Alabama. The Airport Lieutenant serves as the first-line supervisor of assigned firefighter/EMT personnel on shift, operating under the direction of the Fire Captain. The Lieutenant provides leadership and oversight of advanced fire, rescue, emergency medical, and hazardous materials response services in a 24/7/365 aviation manufacturing environment. Duties include supervising structural and aircraft firefighting operations, confined space rescue (including aircraft fuel tank entry), medical emergency response, ARFF standby for engine starts and flight test operations, and fire safety management. A significant portion of time is dedicated to personnel supervision, crew readiness, apparatus and equipment accountability, training coordination, life safety system inspections, and liaison with Airbus EHS and manufacturing operations.

Examples of What You Will Do:

  • Assume command or assist in command of all actual, potential, or simulated aircraft, hazardous materials (HAZMAT), structural, and EMS incidents; supervise assigned personnel and make tactical decisions determining the best method of response under the direction of the Fire Captain.
  • Act as a first responder to medical emergencies involving Airbus employees and visitors on the Mobile Manufacturing Site campus; provide emergency medical care at the EMT-Basic level under the direction of the Airbus Mobile Medical Director and in accordance with the approved standard of care.
  • Supervise and ensure station apparatus, equipment, and spare equipment are maintained in good condition and ready for service at all times; hold assigned crew accountable for daily readiness standards.
  • Responsible for ensuring all daily, weekly, semi-annual and annual vehicle and equipment inspections are completed.
  • Perform inspections of buildings, structures, fueling facilities and fueling vehicles for fire safety hazards and the elimination of such hazards.
  • Responsible for prompt and proper completion of required reports.
  • Lead and assist in the implementation of the Airbus Mobile Emergency Action Plan and Severe Weather Policy; direct crew response to all incidents on the Airbus campus including aircraft fueling/defueling operations, first engine starts, and flight test standby activities.
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct shift training; attend required training classes and deliver fire safety and emergency response training for Airbus employees and on-site contractors as required. Supervise participation in monthly joint drills with EHS and Airbus on-site medical services. Document all training and maintain records on file for a minimum of 24 months; report training completion to the Fire Captain.
  • Responds to all emergency and non-emergency calls dispatched on the Airbus Mobile Manufacturing Site and, when required under mutual aid agreements, to Airbus aircraft incidents off-site.
  • Responsible for driving emergency vehicles, navigating, operating the audible warning devices, listening to and responding to radio communications.
  • Responsible for ensuring the safe response and arrival of crew and apparatus to emergency scenes when driving apparatus.
  • Perform and document scheduled inspections of life safety equipment including fire extinguishers (NFPA 10), fire hydrants (NFPA 291), fire doors (NFPA 80), fire department connections (NFPA 25), post indicator valves (NFPA 25), electronic tamper switches (NFPA 25), and AEDs (monthly); record all inspections in the electronic database accessible to the customer.
  • Perform confined space rescue operations within aircraft fuel tanks (dry and wet) IAW OSHA 1910.146(K) and Airbus procedures; operate gas monitoring and ventilation equipment and conduct quarterly hands-on rescue drills.
  • Perform first-line supervisory duties including scheduling, performance counseling, documentation of personnel matters, and communication of operational directives from the Fire Captain to assigned crew members; serve as acting Fire Captain in the Captain's absence as directed.
  • This position requires uncommon tours of duty including weekends, holidays, rotating shift assignments, and overtime duty. Must be able to work any shift assigned, including nights, holidays, and weekends to include scheduled and unscheduled overtime and as needed on an emergency basis.

Position Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate. Minimum of three (3) years of experience as an Airport Firefighter/EMT or equivalent is required. Background investigation and pre-employment drug screening is conducted.
  • Must have NIMS 100, 200, 300, 700, and 800
  • Must be certified as an NFPA 1001 Firefighter II in Alabama or have ability to obtain reciprocity.
  • Must be certified to the NFPA 472, Hazardous Materials-Operations in Alabama or have ability to obtain reciprocity. Must meet the normative requirements of NFPA 600 (Industrial Fire Brigades), NFPA 1710, and NFPA 460 for industrial fire brigade operations.
  • Must be certified as an NFPA 1003 Airport Firefighter by the State of Alabama with current annual live fire burn, or have ability to obtain reciprocity. ARFF vehicle operations per NFPA 414 required.
  • Must be certified to the Fire Instructor I certification (NFPA 1041) in Alabama or have ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
  • Must be certified to the Fire Officer I certification (NFPA 1021) in Alabama or have ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
  • Must be certified as an Alabama EMT-Basic (or higher) at time of hire. Must maintain EMS certification for the duration of employment. Must be able to operate under the direction of the Rural Metro Fire Medical Director and follow the approved standard of care for patient treatment and transfer.
  • Valid driver license with acceptable driving record in accordance with company policy. DUI within last 5 years is disqualifying.
