The Fire Captain testing process is anticipated to be scheduled during the last week of October 26th -30th. This is subject to change if needed. Candidate’s will be invited to testing based on minimum qualifications and notified after position has been closed.

Position Summary

This position is a first-line supervisor, responsible for leading assigned personnel in fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, and related emergency response activities. Provides daily leadership, oversees safety and compliance with department policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned firefighters and ensures quality of work.
  • Oversee emergency response activities including fire suppression.
  • In the absence of a senior firefighter/ officer, may assume incident command.
  • Reviews, reports, and documents associated with calls.
  • Makes recommendations regarding firefighter employment status.
  • Continuously represents department’s Mission, Core Values and Expectations.
  • Follows and enforces department policies and procedures, and protocols.
  • Provide input for new equipment and supplies for essential operations.
  • Performs/ oversees general maintenance necessary for equipment and buildings.
  • Responds to emergency calls, by riding or driving fire apparatus.
  • Clean inspects and maintains SCBA’s.
  • Searches in adverse conditions at fire scenes, natural disasters, and auto accidents.
  • Rescues victims from fire and dangerous situations.
  • Operates hydraulic rescue tools, air monitoring equipment, and various hand tools such as ropes, axes and other manual powered tools.
  • Evaluate accident scenes, patient conditions and administers aid per protocol.
  • Monitors patient vital signs and provides intermediate support until transported.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled meetings as determined by administration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of

  • Considerable knowledge of firefighting methods, techniques and procedures.
  • Firefighting equipment types, varieties and most appropriate effective use.
  • State and city codes, laws, regulations and ordinances related to fire prevention, fire vehicle equipment and apparatus operation.

Skilled in

  • Incident Command and Leadership.
  • Usage of Fire service equipment, apparatus, and safety systems.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with team members and reporting incidents with accuracy.

Ability to

  • Ability to react and or adapt quickly, make decisions under stress, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Follow strict safety protocols to protect self and others
  • Perform strenuous physical labor under extreme weather conditions.

Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED (or equivalent), being at least 18 years of age, and possession of a valid Utah Driver’s License. Candidates must also possess a minimum of five (5) years of full-time firefighting experience.

Required Certifications at the time of hire/ promotion

  • Utah State Firefighter I and Firefighter II
  • State Wildland Firefighter I – Red Card Certified
  • Haz-Mat Operations
  • Hazmat Awareness
  • ADO Pumper Operator and Aerial certifications
  • Advanced EMT or Paramedic license
  • Utah State Fire Officer 1
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, 701 and 800
  • Maintain physical condition to perform essential duties
  • Pass a pre-hire and annual Physical Agility Test

Preferred Certifications

  • Utah State EMS or Fire Service Instructor 1
  • PALs, CPR, ACLS Instructor
  • Training Program Experience
  • Associate Degree in related field from accredited college

Required Certifications after hire/promotion

  • EMS Instructor within one (1) year of hire
  • PALs, CPR, ACLS Instructor within one (1) year of hire
  • NIMS 300, within two (2) years of hire
  • NIMS 400; within two (2) years of hire
  • Utah State Fire Service Instructor 1; within two (2) years of hire
  • UFRA CTC within one (1) year of hire

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements listed below represent the essential functions of the Fire Captain position and are necessary to perform the job safely and effectively;

Must have the physical capability to lift, carry, drag, push, or move items weighing up to 75 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with team assistance. Employee must be able to perform sustained physical activity, including climbing stairs, advancing hose lines, operating tools, and conducting rescue tasks while wearing full structural firefighting personal protective equipment in high-heat, low-visibility environments. Firefighters frequently walk, run, crawl, crouch, kneel, stoop, and climb ladders or stairs, maintaining balance on uneven or elevated surfaces. They must be able to read gauges, instruments, maps, and digital displays and quickly observe hazards in dynamic and rapidly changing situations. Acute hearing is essential for detecting radios, alarms, and verbal commands in high ambient noise and effective communication, via radio, intercom, verbal, and written forms is critical in emergency settings. The employee will also need the endurance to sit or stand for extended periods while remaining alert and responsive to operational demands.

Work Environment

Work may occur indoors or outdoors and in all weather conditions. Personnel may be exposed to loud noise, heat, smoke, hazardous materials, bloodborne pathogens, traffic hazards confined spaces, unstable structures and emotionally stressful situations.
