In this role, you'll:
Join our Sydney Trains’ Rail Fire and Emergency Services unit. We’re a friendly, close-knit team that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Being one of the only specialised rail emergency response service in the Greater Sydney area, our technical expertise is critical when incidents happen across the rail network. We work to ensure the safety of staff, contractors, commuters, and emergency services personnel, and resolve emergencies quickly to minimise network disruptions for the millions of people that rely on it every day.
You'll respond to rail emergencies across the Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro network when they occur. You'll also act as a key support for emergency services when an emergency occurs, providing expert advice and assisting with emergency operations. During an emergency, you and your team will work together to support safe access routes and maintain safe working conditions for emergency services, assist with firefighting efforts, evacuate people, administer first aid, and protect property and the environment.
You'll support ongoing prevention and protection activities across the Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro networks. This includes active participation in organised emergency drills, routine testing and maintenance of fire appliances and associated equipment and contributing to the development and review of pre-incident plans for stations, trains, and other key infrastructure.
We’ll provide plenty of on-the-job and formal training and ongoing support to help you develop the right skills and knowledge to perform in the role. This is a Permanent full time position, site based in Haymarket.

About you
You have demonstrated experience in firefighting in an urban fire and rescue service, emergency operations or related emergency services field and can demonstrate a knowledge of the challenges, practices and procedures relating to rail fire and life safety and emergency management. You’re someone who can work towards a common purpose and goal within a team and communicate clearly with your team members and others. You’re also willing to work to a rostered schedule (12/12), which will include early mornings, evenings and weekends.
Resilience is an important attribute for this job. While being an RFE Technician is rewarding and dynamic, the nature of the job means you’ll sometimes be exposed to potentially traumatic incidents and face unpredictable and sometimes extended and dangerous conditions such as elevated temperatures, confined spaces, or poor visibility.
