Fire Alarm and Life Safety Project Manager

Johnson Controls is a global leader in smart, healthy, and sustainable buildings, fire protection, and life safety. In this role, you will help deliver reliable fire alarm and life-safety solutions for corporate customers across multiple facilities, ensuring projects move smoothly from design through installation, testing, and turnover.

You will manage and support the technical execution of multiple concurrent fire alarm projects, combining hands-on field work with project coordination to make sure scope, materials, code compliance, and client requirements are aligned from start to finish.

This position provides a seamless interface between design and operations before and during project implementation. You will install, test, inspect, program, and troubleshoot commercial fire alarm systems and related life-safety equipment while coordinating with internal teams, electrical contractors, inspectors, and customers to keep work progressing safely and on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, test, inspect, and program fire alarm systems, including fire alarm control panels, initiating devices, notification appliances, low-voltage wiring, and networked audio where applicable.
  • Support the technical management of multiple concurrent fire alarm projects at automotive and industrial customer sites.
  • Program, commission, and troubleshoot fire alarm networks and coordinate integration with internal systems.
  • Interface with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to support permits, approvals, and inspections.
  • Troubleshoot system faults and verify compliance with NFPA 72 and local amendments.
  • Diagnose issues in low-voltage wiring, addressable devices, and panels, and work with electrical contractors to implement repairs.
  • Conduct functional tests and inspections for new projects, expansions, and add-ons; prepare test reports and turnover documentation.
  • Maintain detailed project logs, daily activity reports, and complete project documentation.
  • Coordinate travel for out-of-town projects and manage on-site staffing, equipment, and materials.
  • Lead regular project reviews with the team to maintain quality, standards compliance, and schedule control.
  • Communicate with upper management to optimize work output, project planning, and scheduling.
  • Work closely with electrical contractors from start to finish during installation to ensure alignment with design and specifications.

How You Will Do It

  • Own the work with accountability, safety, and integrity, making sure scope, quality, and schedule stay under control in the field.
  • Stay close to the jobsite by confirming materials, labor, and sequencing before work starts, and by removing obstacles quickly when conditions change.
  • Work as one team with project managers, electrical contractors, technicians, inspectors, and leadership to keep installation and closeout moving forward.
  • Use NFPA 72, local amendments, and AHJ requirements as the basis for testing, approvals, corrections, and turnover.
  • Improve every day through clear daily reporting, disciplined project reviews, and practical problem-solving when technical issues arise.
  • Document thoroughly so test results, site activities, and closeout records support quality, compliance, and customer confidence.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to travel to multiple sites in different states.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screen.
  • Ability to work on-site in commercial, automotive, and industrial facilities and perform physical field duties as needed.
  • Willingness to obtain a NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level 1 certification within 12 to 18 months.
  • Working knowledge of fire alarm systems, low-voltage wiring, and code-compliant field practices.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and coordination skills.

Nice to Have

  • 4+ years of comprehensive electrical experience in engineering, installation, commissioning, or service.
  • Experience with fire alarm installation, commissioning, programming, or troubleshooting.
  • NICET Fire Alarm Designer/Technician certification or equivalent.
  • Experience in automotive or industrial environments.
  • Ability to read blueprints, system manuals, and technical drawings.
  • Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude, including familiarity with hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 25 and experience working with addressable devices, fire alarm networks, and related life-safety systems.
