FinOps Data Analyst – Cost Insight and Business Alignment – Grade 5

The FinOps Data Analyst translates complex cloud and data platform usage into clear, actionable financial insights that drive accountability, optimization, and smarter investment decisions. This role sits at the intersection of Engineering, Data, and Finance, focusing on cost transparency, spend drivers, and optimization opportunities across enterprise data and AI platforms, including Snowflake and public cloud environments.

The analyst partners closely with engineering, product, finance, procurement, and vendor management teams to build dashboards, define KPIs, explain cost variance, and support forecasting and budgeting. Success in this role comes from the ability to turn raw usage and billing data into credible insights that influence day‑to‑day decisions and long‑term platform strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze Snowflake, cloud, and data platform billing data to identify spend drivers, usage trends, and cost optimization opportunities

  • Build, maintain, and interpret dashboards, KPIs, and reporting that enable cost transparency, showback, and future chargeback

  • Partner with engineering and product teams to explain cost variance, validate optimization recommendations, and support architectural trade‑off decisions

  • Support financial planning activities, including forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis, in close alignment with Finance

  • Contribute to cloud and platform cost governance by monitoring utilization, identifying risks, and tracking savings initiatives

  • Produce clear, credible insights and narratives that enable informed cost decisions across technical and financial audiences

  • Support ongoing improvement of FinOps processes, tooling, and data quality

  • Participate in recurring reviews of spend, trends, and investment priorities with cross‑functional stakeholders

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field

  • Experience in FinOps, cloud financial management, technology finance, data analytics, or cost optimization roles (entry to mid‑level, depending on scope)

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to navigate large, complex datasets and translate findings into business insights

  • Understanding of cloud pricing models, consumption‑based services, and cost allocation concepts (showback/chargeback)

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), data platforms, and tools such as Snowflake is strongly preferred

Key Skills and Attributes

  • Cloud Financial Analysis: Strong grounding in cloud economics, usage‑based pricing, and optimization levers

  • Data and Visualization: Experience building dashboards, KPIs, and reports that support financial transparency and accountability

  • Business Communication: Ability to clearly explain cost drivers and recommendations to both technical and financial stakeholders

  • Collaboration: Proven ability to partner across engineering, data, product, and finance teams

  • Problem Solving: Curious, detail‑oriented approach to identifying inefficiencies and improvement opportunities

  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, evolving environment with ambiguous inputs

The Value You Deliver

  • Improved visibility into cloud and data platform spend through clear, trusted reporting and insights

  • Better cost accountability across engineering and product teams through transparent KPIs and analysis

  • Actionable recommendations that reduce waste and inform optimization and investment decisions

  • Stronger alignment between technology usage, financial planning, and business priorities

  • Continuous improvement in FinOps maturity, processes, and decision‑making across the organization
