Key Responsibilities

The Finishing Prep Technician prepares materials, components, and surfaces for paint, primer, refinishing, assembly, and other finishing processes. This role supports the finishing team by reviewing job requirements, using the correct preparation methods, and completing work within expected time and material standards.
This position works closely with the Finishing Team Lead and production team members to maintain quality, workflow, safety, and cleanliness in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The role requires hands-on shop skills, attention to detail, and the ability to follow procedures that support consistent finished products.
  • Review work orders, production expectations, and finishing requirements before beginning assigned work.
  • Prepare materials and surfaces for finishing, including sanding, feathering edges, blocking, and preparing surfaces for primer or refinishing.
  • Use appropriate prep methods, tools, materials, and time standards for each job.
  • Stage, organize, and handle materials safely to support production flow and finishing schedules.
  • Assist finishing, fabrication, installation, and production team members as needed to accomplish team goals.
  • Verify that proper procedures are followed to maintain product specifications and Gable quality standards.
  • Follow vendor procedures for maintaining tools, equipment, and related requirements.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, measuring tools, and shop equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Identify production issues, labor needs, material concerns, or process problems and communicate them to management or the team lead.
  • Maintain accurate cross-team communication to support efficient handoffs and production coordination.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and disciplined workspace throughout the shift.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of required PPE and safe material handling practices.
  • Comply with OSHA, MOSH, hazardous waste disposal, and internal safety requirements.
  • Support a team-oriented production environment by assisting department personnel when needed.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned within the normal scope of the role.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in finishing prep, surface preparation, sanding, painting support, fabrication, manufacturing, or a related production environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, measuring tools, and basic shop equipment.
  • Basic understanding of finishing materials such as wood, metal, acrylic, plastics, laminates, or similar substrates preferred.
  • Ability to sand, featheredge, block, stage, organize, and prepare materials accurately for finishing.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality, safety, and finished appearance.
  • Ability to lift, move, stage, and organize materials safely.
  • Forklift, pallet jack, or other material handling experience preferred.
  • Dependable, organized, and able to work independently while supporting production leads and team members in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to follow safety procedures, wear required PPE, and maintain a clean, orderly work area.
