Contribute to Sterling Steel safely producing high quality products at the lowest cost by

Effectively supervising employees and process in Rod Mill Finishing End

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Provide daily supervision of employees in Finishing End
  • Enforce rotation of employees in Finishing Attendant positions
  • Participate in creation of training for Finishing End employees
  • Educate employees on what we do as well as how and why we do it
  • Provide ongoing training & coaching of current and new finishing end employees
  • Document employee performance issues
  • Administer employee discipline
  • Participate in Union employee grievance procedures
  • Monitor processes that affect timeliness of operation and quality of product
  • Oversee coil staging
  • Determine which cars are to be loaded first
  • Assure coils are properly identified
  • Verify correct number of coils are loaded into cars
  • Verify proper parameters are set at heath/batch changes
  • Assist maintenance with troubleshooting and repairs
  • Make decisions such as what to do about quality issues, whether to scrap or not, etc.
  • Schedule rework and verify it is addressed in the shift it was made
  • Take samples to lab or assign appropriate employees to do so
  • Complete required reports
  • Report operational issues to General Manager & Roller in a timely manner
  • Provide effective communication between Mill and Finishing End
  • Share information with other Finishing End Supervisor at beginning/end of each shift
  • Create and send reports
  • Fill in for Shift Supervisor and Shipping Supervisor as needed
  • Assist Rod Mill General Supervisor & General Manager as directed
  • Perform fire watch duties when scheduled
  • Audit and update SJPs
  • Verify that all SJPs and Safety processes are followed
  • Enforce SSC Work Rules and Policies consistently
  • Champion and participate in ECO, QMS & Continuous Improvement initiatives
  • Participate in training from HR, Rod Manager, Lab, Roller, and other supervisors
  • Take initiative to learn more about Rod Mill & Shipping processes
  • Comply with and enforce all SSC Safety rules
  • All other duties as assigned

Experience/Education/Knowledge:

  • General knowledge of entire SSC Rod Mill process
  • Extensive understanding of Sterling Steel’s Rod Mill Finishing End & Shipping processes
  • Familiarity with LPCS
  • Basic Outlook skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to learn and retain new information
  • Previous leadership experience helpful

Physical Demands:

  • Mobility to move to any area of Rod Mill including over uneven surfaces, up/down stairs and ladders
  • Strength and stamina to remain on feet for majority of 12-hour shifts
  • Vision to monitor production in person and on monitors
  • Dexterity to utilize computer and other office machinery
  • Lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
