St. Mary’s College of Maryland at Historic St. Mary’s City is accepting résumés for the position of Fine Art Collections Project Mentor.

The Fine Art Collection Project Mentor is a contingent, part-time, majority remote position charged with organizing, guiding, and advising on projects related to the management, care, documentation, and movement of the SMCM Fine Art Collection. Working closely with the Executive Director of the Library and Collections, the Project Mentor will help design, monitor, and document projects that can be implemented by student employees and interns supporting the Boyden Gallery and Fine Art Collection, with particular attention to forthcoming campus renovation activity, related art movement, annual record-keeping, and the maintenance of the Collection’s storage spaces. The person in this role will provide guidance and training on condition reporting, art handling, inventory control, collections database management, storage and movement of collection items, emergency/disaster and pest control planning, and standard museum registration practices. The Project Mentor will meet remotely or provide asynchronous guidance to the Executive Director of the Library and Collections and will support the College’s efforts to maintain accurate records and responsible stewardship of the SMCM Fine Art Collection. When necessary, the Project Mentor can come to campus. The compensation for this position is $20 per hour.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in art, art history, museum studies, conservation/preservation, collections management, or a related field
• Minimum of six months of experience in gallery and/or collections support
• Knowledge of records management, art handling and transport, accessioning and deaccessioning policy, loan management, and collections database management
• Detail-oriented, with a strong working knowledge of standard museum registration methods and practices
• Ability to work with and provide guidance to a small staff of student workers through remote technologies
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Experience and/or interest in supporting work in a small, rural, liberal arts academic environment preferred.
