Your duty station will be based on agency needs and your location. This position requires travel across North Carolina to assist prosecutors in various districts, making adaptability and independence essential.

As a Financial Crimes Resource Prosecutor, you will be a vital partner in empowering prosecutors and allied professionals with the tools, training, and guidance they need to maneuver through the Court System effectively. Key responsibilities include:

• Be the Expert Serve as a resource to prosecutors, law enforcement, financial professionals, social workers, victim advocacy agencies, and other allied professionals who work with victims of financial crimes and vulnerable adults in the State of North Carolina.
• Legal Consultation Provide expert legal advice and technical assistance on financial crimes cases to prosecutors across the state.
• Case Prosecution & Litigation Serve as lead or associate counsel, prepare and present cases in court, and represent the state in financial crimes cases as assigned.
• Pre-Trial Support Support pre-trial investigations, including evidence gathering and strategic case development.
• Resource Development Prepare articles, legal memoranda, and other resources for statewide distribution on current legal issues that involve financial crimes and vulnerable adults.
• Lead Training Initiatives Assess training needs, design tailored programs, and deliver high-impact training to prosecutors, law enforcement, and other allied professionals.
• Provide Expert Guidance Offer legal research, charging guidance, and support for pre-trial, trial, and appellate strategies related to financial crimes cases.

• Collaborate and Connect Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including state and federal agencies, social workers, financial professionals, and other allied professionals.
• Share Knowledge Prepare and publish articles for our statewide magazine, sharing best practices and emerging issues with your peers.
• Innovate Stay on the cutting edge of evidence-gathering techniques and emerging technologies to support law enforcement and prosecutors in the courtroom.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of: North Carolina statutes, common law, and case law; judicial procedures and rules of evidence; case, statutory, and common law; legal research methods, techniques, sources, databases, and other research tools; the operations of the NC court system; and ethical and professional standards of conduct.

Skill in: interpreting and applying criminal laws to information, evidence, and other data; using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of case facts; researching and identifying precedents in case law; utilizing electronic legal research and online systems; organizing work; setting priorities; meeting critical deadlines; and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction.

Ability to: analyze facts and apply applicable law to those facts; conduct legal research; plan, develop, and execute an effective litigation strategy to achieve desired results; prepare, organize, and conduct witness examinations; deliver opening statements, closing arguments, and evidentiary objections; express complex legal concepts and related facts clearly and concisely; argue clearly, logically, and persuasively; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and other participants in the criminal justice process; recognize and solve problems; produce legal interpretations quickly and responsively for court officials; write reports, motions, briefs, and other legal documents; deal tactfully with sensitive situations; communicate both orally and in writing; and work independently.

Minimum Education and Experience

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school and an active North Carolina law license.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge and Experience Extensive understanding of federal, state, and constitutional law, especially regarding financial crimes cases. Familiarity with the NC General Statutes, rules of evidence, and the NC court system.
• Technical Legal Skills Proficiency in legal research, strategic case analysis, and complex trial preparation. Skilled in interpreting complex criminal laws and applying them to cases in real time.
• Communication and Collaboration Ability to work well with other attorneys, law enforcement, and criminal justice partners. Effective in both oral and written communication and comfortable representing cases in court.

Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:

• Demonstrated a clear, concise writing style.
• Attended an instructor development training program.
• Litigated multiple financial crimes cases in a jury trial setting.
• Managed a caseload of felony level offenses.
