Under the direction of the Financial Counselor Supervisor and Manager, the Financial Counselor provides financial counseling services to uninsured and underinsured patients in assigned inpatient and outpatient settings. This role guides patients through available state insurance and financial assistance programs, provides certified assistance with applications, and educates patients about insurance benefits and self-pay balances.
Screens uninsured and underinsured patients for eligibility for grant-funded and government-sponsored programs and assists patients in obtaining appropriate financial sponsorship. Identifies Medicare patients without secondary insurance, assists with applications for supplemental coverage, and ensures all required billing information is obtained for liability cases and newborn coverage.
Assists patients with completing MassHealth, DDU, and BHS Financial Assistance applications. Helps approved patients select an appropriate plan and assists denied patients with redetermination efforts. Tracks application status to facilitate and expedite the approval process.
Reviews and updates patient and guarantor demographic, financial, and insurance information in appropriate systems. Ensures all information collected meets requirements for third-party claim submission and thoroughly documents significant account activity.
Maintains current knowledge of resources available to uninsured and underinsured patients and makes appropriate referrals as needed.
Collaborates with case managers, social workers, and nursing units regarding eligibility requirements and patient benefits to obtain the most comprehensive coverage and financial sponsorship possible.
Maintains knowledge of payer guidelines related to benefits, eligibility, and authorization requirements through web portals and direct communication with insurance carriers.
Meets established productivity standards for the position and maintains an account accuracy rate of at least 97%.
Demonstrates proficiency in the computer programs and systems required for the position.
Reviews and responds to patient billing questions, receives and accurately applies payments to patient accounts in HP24, completes daily cashier functions, and prepares deposits as needed and/or assigned. (BFMC only)
Cross-trains in Grade 42 registration responsibilities.
Registers and/or pre-registers patients both in person and by telephone.

Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
