The Senior Patient Access Financial Counseling Specialist (FC) duties are to evaluate financial coverage for patients being considered for medication services. The FC will verify insurance benefits, including pharmacy, and obtain pre-authorization for services from third party payers. The FC will also educate patients/family members, and/or care givers in a clinic setting and /or an inpatient setting on the financial requirements of transplant. Exceptional communication, interpersonal skills and vast knowledge of insurance contracts and benefits, including pharmacy, are required to effectively interact with the patient, family members, and/or caregivers. This position is responsible for processing prior authorization and insurance verification for outpatient medications for high dollar procedural areas. The objective is to initiate prior authorization at least 15 days ahead of the appointment date, which is required timeframe by the majority of managed care and commercial insurance companies.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent education level
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years health care/office related experience, or a high school diploma and 7 years’ experience, or a high school diploma and combination of college and experience years to equal 7. However, other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements upon committee approval.
  • Excellent computer, word processing, and business office skills. Excellent language, communication and telephone skills. Ability to organize and prioritize duties. Experience in healthcare organizations is highly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or health related field
  • 7 years’ experience in healthcare/clinical business setting.
  • Epic Cadence knowledge will be essential. Must learn other programs as necessary, i.e. Drop Box, Access, Visio

Job Requirements:

  • Responsible for planning, organizing and implementing financial counseling services to patients and families.
  • Responsible for screening patients to determine potential for program assistance and eligibility for treatment with UAMS clinical staff and will partner closely with Pharmacy department.
  • Performs thorough financial screening of eligible patient referrals.
  • Researches, verifies benefits, and documents patient insurance coverage and patient financial information.
  • Insures authorizations for all testing and imaging are obtained prior to services rendered.
  • Serves as a resource for patients, family members and/or caregivers on financial matters and assists them with questions concerning insurance and other financial issues.
  • Works with patients and other UAMS team members to address financial gaps and identify alternative funding options.
  • Acts as a contact for payers, UAMS contracts management, UAMS Hospital Billing Services and Professional Billing Services as requested. Collects and submits necessary clinical documentation and correspondence to requesting parties in a timely manner.
  • Provides clinical updates to insurance nurse case managers as requested.
  • Acquires prior authorization for diagnostic testing/labs/physician visits as needed.
  • Performs and communicates related patient follow-up with team members and clinical staff. Identifies, effectively communicates and accurately documents patient financial information to the necessary teams.
  • Keeps financial profiles updated and accurate on all active patients.
  • Keeps the necessary teams apprised of any issues related to payer authorizations and reimbursements.
  • Keeps up to date on financial requirements, in keeping with regulatory requirements of various agencies, including CMS and The Joint Commission.
  • Provides general support to patient access to include the generation of required forms, letters, and benefit verification to patients, referring physicians and regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinates with scheduling and appropriate Leadership, providing financial information or changes in insurance coverage. Any denied services are communicated promptly with the clinic providers and a final decision is discussed with the patients/caregivers.
  • Effectively communicate and promptly seek an appeal or retroactive authorization when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
