Company Overview

Our client is a small holding group that owns and runs several businesses. Today that's three: a software company that property managers use to run inspections, and two service businesses in inspections and property management. More companies may join the group over time.

Each company keeps its own books, and a bookkeeper handles the day-to-day entries. The group needs one finance person across all of them, someone who keeps the numbers solid and helps the CEO and investors make decisions with them.

Your Role

You'll be the finance lead for the group, working across all three companies (and any new ones) and reporting to the CEO. The bookkeeper records the transactions. You check that the books are right and turn them into reports that answer what the CEO and investors are asking.

Much of the job faces outward. You'll present results to investors and get each company ready for tax filing. You'll also bring a finance view to decisions like budgets and setting up a new company, and improve how finance runs in each company, from the month-end close to how cash, payables and receivables are tracked.

Success looks like reports the CEO and investors rely on every month, and a finance setup that keeps working as new companies join the group.

You'll:

• Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports for each company and for the group
• Present results to the CEO and investors, and answer their questions
• Review the bookkeeper's work and own the month-end close and reconciliations
• Get each company ready for tax filing, and keep payroll and sales tax on schedule
• Track cash, payables and receivables so upcoming needs show up early
• Build budgets and give a finance view on spending and new initiatives
• Improve finance processes and controls, and set up the books when a new company joins

You Bring:

• Experience as a finance manager, controller, senior accountant or similar, ideally at a small or growing company
• Financial reports you prepared and presented to owners, a CEO, investors or a board
• Budgeting or financial planning that fed into real business decisions
• Experience getting a company's books ready for tax filing
• Enough month-end close and reconciliation experience to review a bookkeeper's work with confidence

Bonus Points:

• A CPA license
• Handling more than one company's books at the same time
• Using AI tools in finance work, such as reconciliations or report drafts
• Background in property management, real estate services or inspections

What's Offered:

• Hybrid: at least one day a week in person in Davis, CA, with the rest of the week remote on US business hours
• Full time, around 40 hours a week, as a W-2 employee or as a contractor (the client is open to either)
• Pay set with you based on experience, as an annual salary or an hourly rate for a contractor setup. Share the range that fits your level and we'll go from there
• Direct work with the CEO and the group's investors
• A bookkeeper on daily entries, so your time goes to reporting and improving the finance side
• Room to grow with the group as it adds companies
