Job Description

Our client, a growing UK private equity group, is looking for a Finance Director to handle the day-to-day finance operations of a group of software companies (currently 4 UK-based companies, which is expected to grow to 6 companies given their aggressive acquisition strategy).

The role requires someone ambitious with small company experience who can manage a team of two (a bookkeeper + 1 other to be hired) and be hands-on with the financial operations (personally strong with spreadsheets), and can also have the drive to help integrate businesses and get involved in some of the commercial deals/bigger clients.

The combined size of the group of companies is 6.5 million GBP in revenues, 2 million EBITDA and 65 staff members (although this is expected to grow to 10 million and towards 100 people).

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced finance leader who enjoys building value in entrepreneurial software businesses and is comfortable working across multiple entities.

The client uses the Xero accounting package across the group companies.

Location: Home-based UK
Reports to: CEO /
Direct Reports: Bookkeeper + 1 more to be hired and external advisors (outsourced payroll etc)
Package: £80 000 - £100 000 + bonus (no equity)

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership

  • Lead all financial activities across the four group companies.
  • Deliver timely and accurate monthly management accounts, board reports and KPI dashboards.
  • Provide clear analysis of business performance, profitability, cash flow and growth opportunities.
  • Support strategic decision-making through financial modelling and scenario analysis.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO and leadership team.

Commercial Finance

  • Analyse revenue performance, customer profitability, recurring revenue metrics and SaaS KPIs.
  • Support pricing, contract negotiations and commercial decision-making.
  • Evaluate investment opportunities, acquisitions and growth initiatives.
  • Develop financial models for strategic projects and business cases.
  • Identify opportunities to improve margins and operational efficiency.

Planning & Forecasting

  • Lead annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes.
  • Develop rolling cash flow forecasts and working capital management.
  • Monitor performance against budgets and recommend corrective actions.
  • Build forecasting capabilities across the group.

Financial Control & Governance

  • Ensure robust financial controls, policies and procedures.
  • Manage statutory accounts, audits and tax compliance.
  • Oversee payroll, VAT, corporation tax and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage relationships with auditors, banks, insurers and external advisors.
  • Ensure compliance across all group entities.

Operational Improvement

  • Improve finance systems, reporting processes and automation.
  • Develop KPI reporting aligned with business objectives.
  • Drive efficiency across finance and back-office operations.
  • Support integration and standardisation across the four businesses.

Leadership

  • Lead and develop the finance function.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy and continuous improvement.
  • Work collaboratively with operational, sales, product and technology leaders.

Candidate Profile

Essential Experience

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
  • Previous experience as Finance Director, Financial Controller or senior finance leader.
  • Experience in software, SaaS, technology or professional services businesses.
  • Strong commercial finance and business partnering skills.
  • Experience managing multi-entity businesses.
  • Proven track record of improving reporting, controls and business performance.
  • Excellent financial modelling and forecasting capability.
  • Comfortable operating in a hands-on SME environment.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in acquisitive or private equity-backed businesses.
  • SaaS metrics and recurring revenue experience.
  • M&A, fundraising or debt financing experience.
  • Experience implementing finance systems and business intelligence tools.
