Field Testing Breeding Technical Trainee

Job Purpose:

• This trainee position offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in plant breeding operations and to gain initial experience in practical field trials with an international seed company.
• This program is ideal for graduating students who want to pursue a career in agronomic research and crop production.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Participate in all aspects of seed preparation, planting, harvesting and data collection.
• Perform computer-related activities, including handheld data collection, data management and providing support for all day-to-day activities.
• Coordinate and assist in all seed preparation operations including seed shelling, packaging, treating and packet arrangement.
• Coordinate and assist with all field operations including machine planting yield trial plots, nurseries, pollinations, data collection and machine harvesting of yield trial plots.
• Lead field teams and assist with timely and accurate data collection from research plots.
• Assist in implementation of site safety programs to ensure a safe work environment.
• Actively participate in the evaluation and implementation of new technologies.
• Communicate with farmers to coordinate off-station trials.
• 50% of responsibilities are off-site field related activities, which involves traveling.

Qualifications and Competencies:

• National Diploma with appropriate experience in a relevant discipline.
• Basic knowledge of crop production, farming practices and farm equipment operation.
• Knowledge of mobile data collection is an advantage.
• Driver’s license.
