Forestry and Parks are responsible for managing our forests, public lands and provincial parks. Our Ministry accountabilities include:

• Growing Alberta’s environmentally responsible wood products and forestry sector
• Protecting Alberta’s forests from wildfire
• Preserving our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans
• Enabling access to public lands for recreation and purposes while prioritizing conservation
• Managing public lands and balancing sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers

Within the Ministry, Land Operations Division, delivers an integrated approach to the management of provincial Crown Land. The work of the Division reflects the full range of users of the province’s Crown land including conservation, recreation, tourism, energy, forestry, agriculture and traditional land uses.

Role Responsibilities

We are seeking a dynamic and skilled Field Supervisor for our Forestry and Parks, Lands Division. This critical role requires a unique blend of operational, technical, and supervision expertise to oversee the on-the-ground delivery of our Crown land recreation mandate. Reporting to the district Recreation Management Specialist, the Field Supervisor plays a key role in planning, supervising, and delivering recreation infrastructure projects within a multi-use landscape that includes forestry, grazing, oil and gas activities and protected areas. This is a hands-on position that demands an understanding of the local landscape and the ability to adapt and implement new work methods as needed. In addition, the Field Supervisor is responsible for the recruitment and supervision of seasonal recreation staff.

The position is based in the Calgary operations district, which includes the Ghost, McLean Creek Off-Highway, Sibbald Snow-Vehicle, and the Kananaskis Public Land Use Zones.

As a Field Supervisor, you will spend a significant portion of your time in the backcountry, managing and maintaining trails, recreation infrastructure, and ensuring compliance with safety standards and legislative requirements. You will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing equipment and materials, managing occupational health and safety protocols, and providing leadership and technical oversight to seasonal wage staff. Your role also involves close collaboration with external partners, volunteers, and stakeholders to ensure that projects are delivered effectively and that our recreation programs are aligned with both departmental and community goals.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

• The minimum recruitment for this role is a Two-year technical diploma in a related field (forestry, land management, construction related trade) 
• Valid full Class 5 Driver's License and Defensive Driving Certificate.
• First Aid & CPR (Level C), certification.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered based on: 

• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
• 1 year of experience for 1 year education 
•  

Assets:

• Supervisory and leadership abilities to guide and manage teams, ensuring successful project outcomes.
• Proven interpersonal communication skills to develop and maintain positive relationships with team members and stakeholders.
• Experienced in operating, maintaining, and repairing a variety of equipment, including trucks, OHVs, 4x4 vehicles, chainsaws/brush saws, and power tools.
• Experience working independently and navigating in remote and challenging mountainous environments, demonstrating self-reliance and adaptability.
• Competence in identifying key environmental features, including vegetation types, soils, wildlife, and water bodies.
• Familiarity with relevant legislation, including the Public Lands Act, Wilderness Areas Act, and Occupational Health & Safety Act, among others.
• Technical skills/certifications, such as carpentry, heavy equipment operator (i.e. mini-excavator, skid steer, etc), welding, etc.
