Job Description

Leads field commissioning teams and coordinates all resources and logistics required to deliver commissioning activities on Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects at customer sites. Oversees pre-commissioning, commissioning, and energisation of power conversion systems (PCS), battery management systems (BMS), transformers, and associated SCADA/comms infrastructure. Accountable for team performance, quality of deliverables, and adherence to project schedules. Provides technical leadership and direction to field engineers and subcontractors within a defined operations framework.

You will lead and coordinate field commissioning teams to meet project milestones and delivery objectives across a range of sites including BESS, marine, oil and gas, and industrial drives. You will provide technical direction, mentoring, and oversight to engineers and technicians during all phases of commissioning. The role requires decisive problem-solving, the ability to manage competing priorities across multiple work fronts, and clear communication with project management, customers, and subcontractors. Significant travel to project sites is expected, potentially up to 90% travel in home country or abroad

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead pre-commissioning, commissioning, and energisation activities for battery energy storage systems including PCS inverters, battery racks/modules, BMS, transformers, MV switchgear, and protection systems.
  • Supervise and coordinate field engineering teams and subcontractors to ensure commissioning milestones are met safely and on schedule.
  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot SCADA and communications systems (Modbus TCP/RTU, DNP3, Ethernet/fibre) during commissioning and grid connection.
  • Direct battery string testing, thermal management system verification, and state-of-health/state-of-charge acceptance testing.
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact on-site for customers, project managers, and grid operators during commissioning phases.
  • Review and approve commissioning procedures, method statements, and test plans prior to execution.
  • Conduct on-site interpretation of operational data, alarm logs, and fault diagnostics; lead resolution of commissioning issues.
  • Provide management with complete and prompt reporting on commissioning progress, safety, risks, and technical issues.
  • Mentor and develop junior field engineers through on-site guidance, training, and knowledge transfer.
  • Lead root cause analysis efforts and generate technical reports in case of equipment malfunction or commissioning failures.
  • Ensure all site documentation (commissioning records, punch lists, test certificates, as-built markups) is completed to project standards.
  • Hands-on commissioning support including parts replacement, testing, and verification of transformers, inverters, and protection equipment.
  • Champion company Health and Safety policies on-site; conduct toolbox talks and ensure safe work practices across all commissioning activities.
  • Interface at senior management and client leadership levels in a clear and professional manner.

Qualification/Requirements

  • Electrical engineering bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum 5 years of field commissioning experience on power systems, energy storage, or similar electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership of field teams (3+ engineers/technicians) on commissioning or construction sites.
  • Solid understanding of Power Electronics, Electric Power Systems, Medium Voltage, battery chemistry fundamentals, and power conversion topologies.
  • Experience with Battery Management Systems (BMS), power conversion systems (PCS), and energy management systems (EMS).
  • Knowledge of transformers (MV/HV), protection relays, and switchgear commissioning and testing.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems and communications protocols (Modbus TCP/RTU, DNP3, IEC 61850).
  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers. Good literacy in at least one computer programming language.
  • Hands-on experience with test instruments (recorders, power analysers, oscilloscopes, insulation resistance, HI pot, battery impedance testers, etc.).
  • Willing to travel including distant in-country or abroad for extended commissioning periods and with short notice in advance.
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety, and risks/hazards involved in high-voltage and battery storage environments.

Desired Characteristics

  • Fluent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to motivate and hold teams accountable.
