Job Description

Founded in 1904, ESAB Corporation is a premier narrowly diversified global leader in connected fabrication technology and gas control solutions. Our rich history of innovative products, workflow solutions, and business system, ESAB Business Excellence, enables our purpose of Shaping the World We Imagine™. We’re looking to hire a talented Field Service Engineer based in Canada (remote / field-based with regional and national travel).

Position Overview & Technical Impact

ESAB is seeking a high-caliber, solutions-driven Field Service Engineer (FSE) to lead technical commissioning, system diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and lifecycle support for our industry-leading automated cutting systems across Canada. In this role, you will serve as the frontline technical authority for high-precision CNC cutting tables, multi-axis gantry systems, advanced plasma power sources, oxy-fuel stations, and integrated digital cutting automation.

Working directly at customer manufacturing facilities, heavy fabrication plants, shipyards, and structural steel operations, you will solve complex electromechanical, drive, and software challenges, optimize cutting cycle performance, and partner with plant engineering teams to maximize equipment uptime. If you thrive on troubleshooting complex industrial systems, working autonomously in the field, and delivering engineering excellence, this role offers direct technical impact and clear pathways for career progression within ESAB.

Key Technical Responsibilities

  • Advanced Diagnostics & Root-Cause Troubleshooting: Perform comprehensive electromechanical, electronic, and pneumatic diagnostics on automated CNC cutting machines, AC/DC servo drive systems, height sensors, and high-frequency plasma units using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, schematic drawings, and diagnostic software.
  • Installation & Turnkey Commissioning: Lead on-site system integration, machine alignment, leveling, I/O verification, CNC parameter configuration, process gas calibration, and test cutting to ensure systems meet factory specifications and customer acceptance criteria.
  • Preventative & Corrective Maintenance: Execute planned multi-point maintenance audits, component rebuilds, motion calibration, torch consumable optimization, and emergency repair interventions to ensure 99%+ operational reliability.
  • Control Systems & Automation Support: Diagnose and interface with CNC controllers (e.g., Vision, Columbus CAD/CAM interfaces), PLC logic, industrial fieldbuses (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, PROFINET), and safety interlocks (CSA Z432 / ISO 13849 / NFPA 79 standards).
  • Client Enablement & Operational Training: Deliver technical training for customer maintenance technicians, CNC programmers, and operators on machine safety, daily operation, torch setup, and first-line preventive care.
  • Engineering Feedback & Field Reporting: Author detailed Field Service Reports (FSRs) documenting failure modes, root causes, corrective actions, and recommended preventative spares. Collaborate with Aftermarket and R&D engineering teams to drive design reliability improvements.
  • Spare Parts & Aftermarket Advisory: Assess system wear profiles, formulate bill-of-materials (BOM) recommendations for critical spare parts packages, and support customer retrofit/upgrade roadmaps.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Education & Technical Training: College Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Electrical / Electronic Engineering Technology (EET), Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, Electromechanical / Mechanical Engineering
  • Technology, or equivalent technical trade certificate / Red Seal endorsement (e.g., 442A / 433A / 309A), or Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) technical qualification.
  • Field Experience: 2–5+ years of hands-on experience in industrial field service, machine tool repair, robotics, or automated manufacturing systems.
  • Electromechanical Acumen: Proven ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder logic, hydraulic/pneumatic schematics, and mechanical assembly blueprints.
  • Safety & Standards: Demonstrated commitment to industrial safety standards (Canadian OH&S compliance, WHMIS, Lockout/Tagout [LOTO], CSA Z462 / NFPA 70E Arc Flash awareness).
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. (23 kg) unassisted, work in industrial plant environments, climb ladders, maneuver around large gantry machinery, and stand/walk for extended periods during commissioning.
  • Mobility & Driving: Valid Canadian Driver’s License with a clean driving record and a valid Canadian Passport (or eligibility to obtain one) for occasional cross-border travel/training in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Industry Exposure: Direct experience with thermal cutting technologies (high-definition plasma, oxy-fuel, fiber laser, or waterjet) and CNC motion platforms.
  • Software / CAD/CAM: Familiarity with CNC nesting software, CAD/CAM file formats (DXF, DWG, ESSI, G-code), and remote diagnostic tools.
  • Bilingual Capability: Bilingual proficiency in English and French (verbal and written) is a strong asset; Spanish proficiency is also valued to support collaborative North American engineering initiatives.

Work Environment, Travel & Total Rewards

  • Work Environment: High-paced industrial manufacturing, steel fabrication, shipbuilding, and energy sector job sites. Full PPE and strict adherence to plant safety protocols required.
  • Travel Scope: Up to 100% regional and domestic travel across Canada to customer facilities, with occasional cross-border travel to the U.S. for advanced training and technical support; comprehensive travel expense coverage provided.
