Job Opportunity

  • Entry-level Apprenticeship Program with Smiths Detection to kick-start a technical career in electronics and field service.
  • Unique opportunity to earn while studying through a fully supported Certificate III in Electrical Fitting (TAFE).
  • Structured 4-year program combining practical field experience and formal education, with a pathway to a full-time career.

What you will be doing

  • Attend TAFE training weekly and complete all academic requirements
  • Support installation, maintenance, and repair of X-ray and trace detection systems
  • Travel to customer sites including metropolitan, regional, and remote locations (overnight stays required)
  • Assist in troubleshooting, servicing, and preventative maintenance of equipment
  • Support fault diagnosis across mechanical, electrical (≤24V), and electronic components
  • Use tools such as multimeters, laptops, and embedded software for testing and diagnostics
  • Replace mechanical components (belts, rollers, motors, generators) using lifting aids where required
  • Assist with installation of new equipment alongside internal teams and stakeholders
  • Complete service documentation, reports, and compliance records
  • Participate in safety, technical, and compliance training sessions
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work environment
  • Support spare parts tracking and warehouse activities
  • Attend team meetings, safety briefings, and calibration checks
  • Progress to semi-autonomous work and participate in on-call roster from Year 2

Qualifications

What you’ll bring:

  • Completion of high school or equivalent education
  • Genuine interest in electronics, electrical systems, and hands-on technical work
  • Willingness to enrol in Certificate III in Electrical Fitting (TAFE)
  • Learner, Provisional, or Full Driver’s Licence
  • Ability to obtain required security clearances
  • Flexibility to travel and work across various environments
  • Strong willingness to learn, with a proactive and team-oriented mindset

Nice to have:

  • Basic technical knowledge or exposure to electrical/electronic systems
  • Strong problem-solving aptitude and mechanical interest
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
