Position Overview

The Field Safety Specialist I supports the implementation and continuous improvement of safety programs across multiple lines of business. This role partners with employees and management to promote a strong safety culture, ensure regulatory and company policy compliance, and reduce workplace risks through training, inspections, incident investigations, and corrective action management.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

• Assist with implementation of company safety programs, policies and procedures, including conducting new-hire safety orientation and onboarding programs.
• Participate in routine safety inspections and support site-specific safety planning to identify hazards, mitigate risks, and maintain compliance.
• Help track and support the completion of corrective actions resulting from safety inspections, audits, safety committee meetings and incident investigations as well as maintain all safety records, training documentation, inspection records, and other regulatory compliance items required by OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and the state.
• Support incident investigations assisting with the collection of information, interviewing involved personnel, and documenting findings for injuries, accidents, property damage, and near-miss events.
• Support employee safety engagement efforts through coaching, hazard recognition, and participation in continuous safety improvement activities.
• Deliver and facilitate toolbox talks, safety stand-downs, and other safety training to promote safe work practices and regulatory compliance.
• Observe work practices and provide coaching to reinforce safe work behaviors and promote compliance with safety standards.
• Assist with special projects and safety initiatives to be implemented in the business units.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
• Associates degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school preferred; or one-three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Prior experience in safety, construction or related industries preferred.

Work Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and meet the company MVR requirements.
• Must have strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
• Regular, on-time and consistent attendance is required and must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
• Must be able to travel as required.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

• Working knowledge of OSHA (General Industry & Construction standards), MSHA, FMCSA- DOT regulations and other state and federal agency guidelines.
• Ability to effectively navigate and research regulatory agency and industry related web content.
• Ability to read, comprehend, articulate, and write complex instructions, correspondence and other written content.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft suite of tools including Excel, Word and Outlook, and database software. Must be able to utilize internet.
• Demonstrated problem‑solving skills with the ability to investigate issues, follow defined processes, and coordinate with others to resolve errors and prevent recurrence.
• Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to build rapport, provide guidance, deliver presentations, facilitate training, participate in team discussions, and communicate effectively with both individuals and large groups.
• Willingness and ability to work in and adapt to changes in circumstances, tasks, customer needs and other conditions that may affect their daily responsibilities.
• Ability to facilitate change management and influence positive responses.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

• Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, talk, hear and lift and/or move up to 10 lbs.
• Regularly required to sit and use hands and fingers to manipulate/handle objects.
• Occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch, climb or balance, lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.
• Able to communicate with others by telephone and in person.
• Able to utilize office equipment including a computer for word processing, email communication, and preparation of documents and presentations.
• Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. A variety of noise levels, adverse weather conditions, and complex job sites are to be expected daily. Proper clothing, PPE (personal protective equipment) is required, and safety precautions should be taken to ensure your safety, and the safety of others in all conditions. While performing non-field duties in this position, the environment is typical of an office setting and the noise level is usually quiet to moderate.
