We have an exciting opportunity for Field Ranger - Cattle. The purpose of this role is to execute cattle management, maintain infrastructure, enforce safety and environmental standards, and lead operational teams effectively.

Kumba Iron Ore

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Rosebank, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

As Field Ranger - Cattle your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Apply occupational health and safety standards across the cattle operations.

Cattle Management

  • Maintain feeding supply and stock levels.
  • Provide reliable water supply systems.
  • Monitor animal health and apply veterinary basics.
  • Facilitate marketing and sales processes.
  • Conduct slaughtering processes.
  • Execute weaning, marking, and relocation of cattle.
  • Track and monitor animal movements and conditions.
  • Maintain biological asset registers and accurate records.

Infrastructure Maintenance

  • Repair and maintain fencing (structural and electrical).
  • Construct new fences as required.
  • Maintain water supply systems (pumps, dams, pipes, troughs, waterholes).
  • Service gates and manage access points.
  • Maintain roads for accessibility.
  • Repair kraals and cattle handling facilities.

Monitoring and Emergency Response

  • Implement and oversee security protocols.
  • Respond effectively to fire, flood, and natural emergencies.
  • Manage incidents involving people with professionalism.

This role is in Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) department on a Band P4 (C-Lower) level reporting to the Farm Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • National Higher Qualification in Agriculture/Cattle Management, similar to NQF4
  • Minimum code EC1 driver’s license with a valid PDP.

Technical Knowledge

  • Understand cattle health, fertility management, and disease prevention.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Bonsmara cattle management practices (advantageous).
  • Understand veterinary basics for monitoring and treatment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in infrastructure systems: fencing, water supply, pumps, dams, pipes, roads, and kraals.
  • Understand SHE legislation (OHS Act, Environmental Management Act, Biodiversity Act).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in emergency response frameworks (firefighting, flood management, security protocols).
  • Understand administrative systems: biological asset registers, reporting, and digital record keeping.
