Road & Rail Services is hiring an experienced Field Railcar Maintenance Mechanic based in Madison, Indiana. This position supports railcar inspection, welding, maintenance, and repair projects at various customer and railroad locations.

We're looking for someone who already has hands-on experience working with freight railcars and is comfortable taking those skills into the field. You'll need to be mechanically capable, confident performing repairs, and prepared to travel as assignments require.

Previous railcar repair and welding experience are required. This is not an entry-level railroad position.

If you have worked as a Railroad Carman, Railcar Mechanic, Freight Car Repairer, or similar railroad mechanical professional, this may be a strong opportunity to continue building your career.

What You'll Do

Your assignments may include:

Inspect freight railcars for defects, damage, wear, and maintenance needs

Identify repairs and determine appropriate corrective work

Perform authorized mechanical repairs on railcars and components

Complete stick welding, cutting, grinding, and fabrication work

Service and lubricate railcar components as required

Perform railcar preparation and required stenciling

Safely use welding equipment, hand tools, power tools, and mechanical equipment

Complete inspection reports, repair records, and other required documentation

Operate company vehicles and equipment when assigned

Maintain tools and work areas in safe operating condition

Perform work according to customer, company, and applicable AAR requirements

Follow all railroad, customer, and company safety procedures

What We're Looking For

This position requires an experienced railcar repair professional who can contribute with limited supervision.

Qualified candidates should have:

Previous freight railcar maintenance or repair experience

Welding experience, including stick welding

Knowledge of freight railcar components and repair procedures

Strong mechanical and troubleshooting abilities

Experience safely using mechanical and welding equipment

Ability to accurately complete repair and inspection documentation

Ability to work independently at field locations

Willingness and ability to travel based on operational needs

Valid driver's license

Dependable attendance and a strong commitment to safety

4G and 5G welding experience is strongly preferred.

Travel & Work Conditions

This is a traveling position based in Madison, IN. Employees will travel to customer sites, railroad facilities, and project locations based on business needs. Travel frequency and assignment duration may vary.

Railcar repair is physically active work performed in railroad and industrial environments. Candidates must be comfortable working outdoors in changing weather conditions and around tracks, railcars, heavy equipment, moving machinery, dirt, and noise.

Pay & Benefits
