Job Description

SCA Pittsburgh's Summer Riverview crew will be made up of 10 youth members aged 14-19 and 2 adult mentor crew leaders. The program will primarily work in Pittsburgh’s Riverview Park, with occasional environmental education trips. This program is an entry level position with the goal of connecting young people with nature. The program is 50-75% conservation field work, such as improving trails, managing invasive species, and planting native species. The remainder of the program 25-50% is environmental education, leadership development, and workforce readiness. Participants need no prior experience, but do need to have a desire to work outside in all weather conditions, and willingness to engage in team building activities. This program meets Monday-Friday, 10:00am-4:00pm. There will be an option to attend a camping trip during the program. That trip will take place during the work week.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

SCA Pittsburgh’s crews will be made up of 10 youth members aged 14-18 and 2 adult mentor crew leaders. The program will primarily work in Pittsburgh’s Riverview Park, with occasional environmental education trips. This program is an entry level position with the goal of connecting young people with nature. The program is 50-75% conservation field work, such as improving trails, managing invasive species, and planting native species. The remainder of the program 25-50% is environmental education, leadership development, and workforce readiness. Crew Leaders should have previous teaching, leadership, mentoring, conservation, or outdoor physical labor experience, as well as a desire to work outside in all weather conditions, and willingness to engage youth in team building activities. Leaders will facilitate an overnight camping trip that will take place during the work week. The youth members will work 27.5 hours per week, and leaders will work an average of 40hours a week including weekly staff meetings and programmatic paperwork.

Marginal Duties

Responsible for completing weekly program paperwork including but not limited to verifying timesheets, work logs, and end of season reports. Leaders are responsible for planning and implementing an effective flow for the workday based on project needs and environmental education activities.

Required Qualifications

Previous experience as a mentor, teacher, other leadership position.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with outdoor manual labor.
