Project Overview:

The North Macedonia Motorway Project is of significant national importance, and the Government of North Macedonia is entrusting the joint venture to fast track the development and construction of these strategic motorways which will form part of the Pan-European Corridors IIIV and Xd, which will enhance North Macedonia’s transport connections with neighbouring countries and support economic and social development.

These four new sections of motorway will continue Bechtel’s legacy in delivering successful motorways in the Balkan region. The North Macedonia motorway consists of two sections in the west heading south from the capital Skopje and running parallel to the Sharr mountains, one section passing through the UNESCO natural world heritage site around Lake Ohrid (one of Europe’s deepest and oldest lakes), with the fourth section in the South of the country close to the border with Greece which will enhance connectivity between the cities of Bitola and Prilep.

In anticipation of an awarded contract, Bechtel is actively seeking Geotech Engineer to support the Geotechnical activities on the project. In the Geotech Engineer role, you will be required to work with the joint venture partners team where, in addition to providing technical services, you will have the opportunity to participate in knowledge transfer, coaching and professional guidance to add long-term value to the client’s operation.

Working at the Project Management Organization (PMO) level, the Geotech Engineer reports to the Project Geotech Manger and will lead Project Geotech activities. The role will include supervision, coordination and planning for geotechnical aspects of the design, engineering activities, site works, ground investigations as well as the typical works assets to be covered under the geotechnical discipline including assessments and all infrastructure-related geotechnics thereof.

Great flexibility and proven strategic data reporting & analysis are necessary for this high visibility and significant highway knowledge-based Geotechnical role. This position interfaces with the Client’s project team and its contractor entity to support the review and evolution of the Geotech activities to meet the strategic objectives of the project.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard geotechnical engineering methods preparing specifications for subsurface investigations for new and existing facilities.
  • Performs and may lead geotechnical analyses such as stability of soil and rock slopes, rock excavation and slope protection, bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations, lateral earth pressures, and axial and lateral pile capacities.
  • Prepares geotechnical engineering reports and presents the results of the investigations and reports to members of the project team.
  • Coordinates civil or structural engineering designs with geotechnical assessments.
  • Communicates geotechnical issues with the project team during the engineering design stage of the project.
  • During the construction phase of projects, responsibilities may include overview of earthwork operations, monitoring of pile installation and load testing, inspection of critical foundation subgrade, and monitoring of ground improvement.
  • Oversees outside geotechnical consultants hired by Bechtel or the client to perform these tasks.
  • Identify, assess, and investigate suitable borrow material sources for embankment fill, aggregate, concrete, pavement, and asphalt requirements.
  • Manage geotechnical monitoring programs, including embankment settlement, slope movement, inclinometer, and piezometer monitoring.
  • Support technical risk assessments, safety practices, sustainability initiatives, QA reviews, and evaluation of project scope, quantities, budgets, or schedule changes.
  • Promote continuous improvement, teamwork, communication, innovation, and a positive project work environment.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree in Geotechnical/ Civil Engineering (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience or 9-12 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Design experience of geotechnical works (e.g., GI, bridge foundations, utilities provisions, slopes, etc.) as well as a good understanding of tunnel design (e.., rock, soil, and cut-and-cover). Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to, performing site and subsurface geotechnical investigations, geotechnical engineering designs and specifications, and preparing and reviewing geotechnical calculations.
  • Excellent technical, managing, communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to utilize engineering and office automation tools effectively.
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards.
  • Advanced knowledge of site and subsurface investigation, development of engineering properties of soil and rock, foundation design and analysis, foundation analysis under dynamic loads and earthworks.
  • Advanced knowledge of pile installation and testing, numerical analysis using FEM and FDM, soil and/or rock slope stability and construction specification.
  • Advanced knowledge in use of standard Geotechnical software’s such as SLOPE/W, SIGMA/W, APILE, LPILE, SHAFT, FREW etc.
