Purpose of the Role

Worley is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Field Engineer – Instrumentation to provide construction site engineering expertise and technical support during project execution. This role is responsible for interpreting engineering designs, resolving field issues, coordinating instrumentation construction activities, and ensuring installation and testing activities are performed in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and quality requirements. The Instrumentation Field Engineer serves as a key interface between engineering, construction, quality, and commissioning teams to ensure successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret and analyze instrumentation drawings, specifications, loop diagrams, hook-ups, cable schedules, datasheets, and engineering deliverables to ensure constructability and compliance with project requirements.
  • Provide field engineering support for the installation of instrumentation systems, including transmitters, analyzers, control valves, tubing systems, junction boxes, marshalling cabinets, and associated wiring.
  • Evaluate field conditions and implement design modifications or recommendations necessary to accommodate site requirements while maintaining compliance with engineering intent.
  • Support construction supervision activities and verify that instrumentation installation work is executed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Coordinate with project engineers, construction management, quality personnel, vendors, and commissioning teams to ensure timely execution of instrumentation activities.
  • Review and resolve Requests for Information (RFIs), field change notices, and technical queries associated with instrumentation systems.
  • Perform field inspections and quality checks to verify proper installation, calibration, and completion of instrumentation systems.
  • Monitor contractor performance and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project schedules.
  • Support instrument loop checks, continuity testing, calibration verification, functional testing, and pre-commissioning activities.
  • Assist with the development and review of punch lists and ensure timely resolution of outstanding instrumentation deficiencies.
  • Participate in construction and coordination meetings, providing progress updates and technical recommendations to address field challenges.
  • Review and validate as-built documentation and ensure project records accurately reflect completed installations.
  • Identify potential risks affecting cost, schedule, quality, or safety and recommend corrective actions to mitigate impacts.
  • Ensure all instrumentation activities comply with company HSE requirements, industry codes, and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Promote continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to enhancing construction practices and work processes.
  • Provide mentoring, technical guidance, and support to junior engineers and field personnel as required.

Qualifications and Skillset

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline; or equivalent trade qualification combined with relevant experience.

Experience

  • Experience as a Field Engineer, Instrumentation Engineer, or similar role supporting industrial construction projects.
  • Experience supporting oil and gas, LNG, petrochemical, refining, power generation, or heavy industrial projects is preferred.
  • Familiarity with installation and testing of field instrumentation, control systems, and process automation equipment.

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of instrumentation systems, including:
    • Pressure, temperature, level, and flow instruments.
    • Control valves and valve accessories.
    • Analyzer systems.
    • Tubing and impulse line installations.
    • Junction boxes, marshalling panels, and instrument cabinets.
    • DCS, PLC, SIS, and control system interfaces.
  • Proficiency in interpreting:
    • P&IDs
    • Instrument Indexes
    • Instrument Datasheets
    • Loop Diagrams
    • Hook-Up Drawings
    • Cable Schedules
    • Wiring Diagrams
    • Cause and Effect Matrices
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards, including ISA, IEC, NEC, and project-specific requirements.
  • Familiarity with instrument calibration procedures and loop testing methodologies.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions with limited supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively interface with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with project management and construction management software tools.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work at project sites as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting commissioning and start-up activities.

  • Familiarity with turnover systems and completion management tools.
  • Experience with LNG or large EPC projects.
  • Previous field experience coordinating with construction contractors, quality teams, and commissioning organizations.
