Position Information Join the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Houston District Maintenance Office and play a key role in the district maintenance operations. In this position, the Field Engineer will interact with TxDOT Area Offices and Maintenance Sections on a daily basis to monitor and progress maintenance projects, provide technical and field expertise on maintenance issues, perform interim and final acceptance inspections, Plan Review, Future project development and scoping, Traffic Control Review, Permits Review, Administer Training both formal and informal, as well as review Contractor Claims and Disputes. Work is independent and requires extensive knowledge of Roadway Maintenance and Traffic Control.The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Transportation Engineer IPerforms transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Transportation Engineer IIPerforms complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: Transportation Engineer IAssists in evaluating pavement products and pavement condition data.Assists in overseeing construction project traffic control plans; periodically reviews traffic control devices with Area Engineers.Assists in recommending major maintenance and betterment programs to the district staff.Assists in the development, preparation and letting of maintenance contracts for the district.Coordinates and/or monitors assigned projects/programs/plans.Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.Monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications.Performs and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Transportation Engineer IIIncludes all essential duties listed for Transportation Engineer I as well as:Develops training courses and/or materials.Analyzes and recommends approval for modifications to highway maintenance contracts. Coordinates maintenance matters with Area Engineers.Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:Education:Transportation Engineer I and II: Bachelor's degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.Experience:Transportation Engineer I:4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)Transportation Engineer II:5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent) Licenses and Certifications:Transpiration Engineer I and II:Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.Licensed Prof Engineer Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment. Preferred Qualifications: Transportation Engineer I and II: Knowledge of pavement preservation and rehab techniques.Knowledge of herbicide application and other roadside maintenance techniques.
