Job Description

ABOUT US:Volta Labs is an applications company that is revolutionizing the future of genomics. We are a Boston based, venture-backed biotech startup that makes extracting vital information from biological samples is as simple as pressing a button, through our flagship product Callisto. Our product speeds up processing time for scientists and increases accessibility to important genetic information for patients. Sitting at the intersection of science and engineering, we invite you to join us on our journey to shape the future of genomics, where insatiable curiosity is encouraged and every Voltarian makes an impact.
THE TEAM:You'll join a team of innovative thinkers who love to experiment, collaborate, and win together. We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of automation, biology, computing, robotics, design, and user experience to benefit our customers and the world.

Volta Labs has launched Callisto, our groundbreaking platform for NGS sample prep — and we’re now commercializing it globally. This is a pivotal moment for our company: we’re scaling rapidly, expanding into new markets, and building the team that will transform how genomics is done. Joining Volta now means having a direct impact on bringing a first-in-class technology to scientists worldwide and shaping the future of genomics.

We are looking for a Field Application Scientist (FAS) to join our Customer Success team and support the adoption of Callisto across the United States. This role is based at our Boston headquarters and involves extensive travel to customer sites. You will lead customer onboarding, deliver technical training, and support workflow optimization in genomics labs implementing our technology. As one of the early Field Application Scientists at Volta, you will play a critical role in ensuring customer success while also helping shape best practices for training, support, and new applications.

Day 1 to Year 1:

  • Serve as the primary technical interface for Volta customers across the United States, delivering training, experimental support, and workflow optimization to drive successful adoption of Callisto.
  • Build strong customer relationships and gather actionable feedback for R&D and Product teams.
  • Develop and deliver technical training sessions (remote and on-site) across a spectrum of users, including bench scientists, operations teams, and bioinformatics groups.
  • Optimize customer workflows and experimental design, providing hands-on support for sample prep, library prep, QC, and NGS protocols.
  • Create technical documentation such as protocols, application notes, FAQs, and training materials to support adoption and reproducibility.
  • Support demos, proof-of-concept studies, and pilot projects at customer sites and in-house; assist sales in technical discussions as needed.
  • Within 3 months you’ll…Ramp on Callisto product, protocols, and software workflows; begin shadowing customer training and support visits. Assist with smaller training sessions and troubleshooting tasks; start building relationships with early customers across the United States.
Within 6 months you’ll…Lead independent customer trainings, support visits, and workflow optimizations; establish Volta as a trusted technical partner. Scale technical support activities, publish application notes or optimized protocols, and provide structured feedback to Product and R&D.

At 12+ months you’ll…Serve as a primary technical lead supporting customers across multiple sites in the United States, driving customer success, adoption, and workflow optimization. Establish best practices for training and experimental support, continuously improving workflows and technical documentation. Act as an escalation resource for challenging technical issues and help mentor future FAS hires as the Applications team grows.

Who You Are

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Genomics, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of next-generation sequencing (NGS) workflows, including library prep, sample QC, sequencing platforms, and downstream analysis
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting molecular biology protocols, sample prep challenges, and assay optimization
  • Ability to travel extensively and reliably (Over 50% travel across the United States).
  • Experience in a customer-facing, lab-based role (e.g., applications scientist, field support, tech transfer)
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills; comfortable explaining complex topics to diverse audiences
  • Self-starter, able to thrive in ambiguous, fast-paced environments and collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, product, sales, and operations
  • Willingness to occasionally perform lab work, set up and validate new assays, and maintain detailed experimental documentation
  • Experience with sequencing platforms (Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, PacBio, etc.)
  • Background in automation, robotics, or high-throughput laboratory workflows
  • Experience creating scientific content (application notes, protocols, manuscripts)
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics or downstream analysis pipelines
