Join our HMO USP Optimization Team as a Fermentation Scientist (m/f/d)

The team runs the HMO pilot fermentation laboratory. They prepare and execute bioreactor cultivations to develop and optimize improved process conditions or to produce sample material in pilot scale. This includes preparation, sterilization and cleaning of media and equipment, as well as starting seed trains for microbial cultivation and analyzing in-process controls. Results are documented in batch protocols and electronically. Developed processes are scaled-up to commercial production, to implement improvements in e.g. product yield or quality in industrial scale.


Our team includes 7 people (1 operator, 3 technicians and 3 scientists). They collaborate with e.g. strain development, downstream optimization, production, QA/QC, maintenance, and others. Some of the regular tasks in cross-departmental collaboration are assigned to individual team members, considering their strengths and education

As a Fermentation Scientist, you will be responsible for:

  • Planning of experiments, data analysis and presentation of results to develop and optimize fermentation processes in pilot scale.

  • Technology transfer to production sites and regular production support.

  • Contribute to batch execution (fermentation, microfiltration) in pilot scale and laboratory organization.

  • Improvement of existing as well as sourcing and commissioning of new equipment.

To succeed in this role you will need:

  • Master’s degree in Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry or similar.

  • Track record in optimization of fermentation processes, scale-up and technology transfer within biotech industry, minimum of 3 years

  • Handling and interpretation of analytical data.

  • Experience with advanced process control and automation, knowledge of process analytical technology (PAT) is an advantage.

  • Knowledge of Benchling, JMP or python would be an advantage.

  • Fluent in English and German.

  • Team player with ability to work in a self-dependent way.

  • Reliable person with attention to detail and strong sense of responsibility.

  • Eager to continuously develop her/his own skills and knowledge and to test new concepts during daily operation. Thinks critically, recognizes and solves problems and deviations.

Working conditions:

  • Covering late-shift and weekend duties (Saturday + Sunday) in turn with 4 colleagues, approx. once in 5 weeks for both.

  • Flex time except when working on late shift (fixed working times), 40 h/ week. Tasks include handling of chemicals, steam, genetically modified organisms safety level S1, wearing of different personal safety equipment is required.

  • Candidate will work with process technological equipment

  • This role is up to 2 years fixed term contract, onsite in Rheinbreitbach.
