Provides general supervision for fencing and other operational maintenance of assigned areas of responsibility along the transmission and treatment facilities.

Posting Period: 51/2026 to 5/14/2026
Location: Southborough, MA
Salary: $61,405.11 - $86,816.49 Annually $1,180.87 - $1,669.55 Weekly
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm

Key Responsibilities

  • Exercises general supervision over a number of employees engaged in fence maintenance and other water supply system operation and maintenance.
  • Plans and lays out and supervises work assignments of subordinates engaged in replacement, operation and maintenance of fences, fire lanes, aqueducts, masonry gate chambers, masonry bridges, pipelines, culverts, drainage ditches, driveways, buildings, and miscellaneous structures.
  • Keeps time records of subordinates and makes work and progress reports to supervisor.
  • Exercises working supervision on gates, changes for flood control and water supply as required.
  • Makes preliminary investigations regarding permit requests, zoning variations and makes reports of same to superior.
  • Acts as liaison between MWRA and general public with regards to complaints, inquiries, etc.
  • Maintains records or materials used in assigned area, including gasoline, tools, fencing, lumber, etc.
  • Requisitions equipment and materials as necessary to insure proper maintenance of assigned area.
  • Makes recommendations for subordinate upgrading, training and personal growth.
  • Provides on the job training for crewmembers, as required.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Basic reading, writing, mathematical and oral communication skills as normally attained through a high school education or equivalent; and
  • At least five (5) years experience in aqueduct, reservoir, sewer lines or grounds maintenance; and
  • At least two (2) years in supervisory capacity or successful completion of the MWRA sponsored supervisory training program and receipt of the training certificate; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • A valid Class D Motor Vehicle Operators License.
  • This position has been designated as essential in instances where the MWRA Executive Director requires essential personnel to report to work such as inclement weather or other emergencies.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability in the scheduling and satisfactory completion of designated tasks.
  • Familiarity with the areas of responsibility under the care and control of a water supply system involving aqueducts, gate houses, diversion facilities, etc.
  • Working knowledge of crafts and labor force operations required in general maintenance and repair work.
  • Demonstrated ability to keep time records of subordinates and to make work and progress reports.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job , the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is very loud in field settings, and moderately loud at other work locations.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Works under the general supervision of a General Foreman.
Exercise close supervision of OMC Laborers and Skilled Laborers.
