An exciting opportunity exists for an Indigenous Health Practitioner (Sexual Health). This position is responsible for supporting opportunistic and targeted patient screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, and for contributing to health promotion activities that encourage the adoption of safe sex practices. This position collates biannual STI data for reporting purposes and works with doctors to ensure timely patient follow up and tracing in relation to patients requiring immediate and ongoing medical interventions associated with sexual health care. This role also performs, but not limited to the following activities:

• Assists with the planning, development and distribution of health promotion education and resources for patients with a view to encouraging the adoption of safe sex practices
• Works with health services and pathology labs to collect data to enable the identification of STI / BBV / HIV testing rates, cases diagnosed, and cases treated
• Activates recall and reminder systems relevant to high-risk patients for screening, follow-up and medical intervention.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Monitor sexual health testing and treatment rates across the various clinic locations
• Ensure reporting is occurring on a routine basis
• Participate in reporting processes and dissemination of information to TAIHS staff, external funding bodies and other relevant stakeholders where appropriate
• Conduct patient screening and clinical assessments during GP outreach clinics and sexual health screening clinics
• Provide patient education regarding sexual health care and associated risk factors
• Liaise with client GPs regarding positive results and supporting client follow up
• Perform home visits as required
• Liaise with external service providers for the purposes of contact tracing, recall follow up, and training (QAIHC, Townsville Sexual Health Service, Townsville Population Health Unit)
• Participate in health promotion and education activities – work collaboratively with Health Promotion Officers and Deadly Choices to provide sexual health education to community groups and schools
• Participate in health-worker led outreach sexual health screening clinics
• Provide health promotion through other organisations as directed
• Ensure all client contacts/outcomes are documented, recorded, and reported
• Assist in sexual health inventory ordering and stock-take across clinic locations
• Ensure client follow up stats (male/female breakdown) are maintained daily and reported biannually
• Support clinical staff across all TAIHS clinics (Heatley, Ingham, Maternal and Child Health, Garbutt) with in-house training, access to promotional materials, and clinical support where required
• Participate in Sexual Health Workers Network, QAIHC in the development of resources and other support pathways to help upskill fellow Indigenous Health Workers and Practitioners
• Perform quality control management of point of care testing machine (T-TANGO chlamydia/gonorrhoea/trichomonas) and syphilis point-of-care kit. Perform maintenance and cleaning of T-TANGO machine
• Provide training to clinical staff in the use of syphilis point of care testing and T-TANGO testing
• Work collaboratively with other team members and the wider TAIHS community in a manner that fosters positive reputation, relationships and workplace culture
• Work within legal, ethical and professional frameworks

• Participate in relevant meetings (organisation and team)
• Participate in required training and professional development programs
• Actively monitor, review and assist with improvements to policy, procedure, process and practice across TAIHS - All employees share the authority and responsibility of identifying non-compliances or possible improvements and recording these instances such that corrective or preventive action can be taken, to rectify the immediate situation and to prevent recurrence
• Commit to self-development and self-awareness to support professional growth
• Work in accordance with the TAIHS Code of Conduct and values, workplace health and safety legislation, confidentiality policies and all other relevant policies, procedures and processes
• Undertake other duties as reasonably directed

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Cert IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care or equivalent
• AHPRA Specialist Registration
• Experience in planning, coordinating, and evaluating sexual and reproductive health services in the primary health care setting
• Experience in conducting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health assessments and other clinical assessments required in a primary care setting
• Knowledge of the issues affecting the health and well-being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people living in the Townsville region
• Experience in coordinating, implementing and evaluating community-based health promotion programs and health promotion resources for use in cross cultural settings
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with GPs and other health professionals
• Ability to conduct education and training in sexual and reproductive health
• Ability to use MS Office suite, Medical Director and Pracsoft

Required Licenses and Checks

• Ability to pass a National Police Check – no Serious/Criminal/Court Records
• Current Blue Card (Queensland's Working with Children Check) (or AHPRA registration)
• Current C Class Drivers Licence (Qld)
• Proof of qualifications and current registration (as appropriate) are to be provided prior to commencement of employment
