About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate, skilled female Disability Support Worker to provide support to a 38-year-old female client in Deagon, QLD This is a casual position. The client has a primary diagnosis of a C4 AIS B Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and presents with a range of secondary conditions, including:

  • Severe motor impairment (quadriplegia)
  • Severe upper limb impairment
  • Sensory impairment
  • Neurogenic bladder and bowel
  • Autonomic dysreflexia
  • Respiratory complications
  • Mild cognitive impairment
  • Additionally, the client has suicidal ideation and a history of trauma

This role involves providing engaging support in the client’s home environment, assisting with manual handling, personal care, and other daily living tasks. You will need to manage complex health needs and provide consistent support to ensure her safety and promote her independence.

You’ll be working with a client who requires assistance with both personal care and medical needs while also ensuring her emotional well-being. Clear English communication will be essential in order to engage effectively and ensure safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide personal care and manual handling support, including assistance with transfers, positioning, and daily living tasks.
  • Ensure the safety of the client, while managing her physical and mental health needs.
  • Provide emotional support and meaningful engagement, fostering a positive relationship with the client.
  • Assist with managing suicidal ideation, ensuring appropriate interventions as required.
  • Support the client’s neurogenic bladder and bowel, respiratory care, and help manage autonomic dysreflexia symptoms.
  • Help the client access the community and support her independence.
  • Collaborate with the team during shift handover, especially during the morning and afternoon shifts where two staff are needed

About You

To succeed in this role, you should bring the following:

  • Experience with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), especially C4 AIS B, and a solid understanding of the complexities of quadriplegia and associated health conditions.
  • Comfort with supporting a Hep B client and experience in providing both personal care and manual handling.
  • Experience in emotional support and managing suicidal ideation and trauma-related behaviors.
  • Strong physical fitness and the ability to manage physically demanding situations in a safe manner
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience, especially in high-pressure situations
  • Ability to engage in meaningful conversations and foster rapport with the client
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to the client’s needs in unpredictable situations

Essential Requirements

  • Certificate III in Disability or equivalent qualification
  • Yellow Card
  • Blue Card
  • Current First Aid (HLTAID011) and CPR (HLTAID009) certificates
  • Valid Australian Driver’s License
  • Reliable Comprehensively Insured Car
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Disability Support or similar roles
  • Willingness to undergo pre-employment checks
