Bayside Health is a public health service delivering high-quality care across every stage of life for close to 1.2 million people living in metropolitan Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, Koo Wee Rup, Bass Coast and Southern Gippsland. This 12 month position is in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at The Alfred, commencing February 2027. The position is designed for applicants who would like additional experience or training in adult cardiac surgery, adult cardiac transplantation, adult and paediatric lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.
The position is suited for applicants who have completed their training in cardiothoracic surgery (although they may not necessarily have sat their examination for specialist registration).
Applications are encouraged from suitably qualified and trained doctors.
The position will expose the successful candidate to a broad range of general Cardiothoracic Surgical procedures, which includes >800 cardiac cases and >700 thoracic cases per year. The Unit also has a very busy transplant program, performing 20-30 heart transplants and over 100 lung transplants per year and is the National Paediatric lung transplant program.
Our mechanical circulatory support program uses a variety of different devices, performing approximately 20 - 30 VAD implants per year as well as supporting a busy ECMO service. The Alfred provides national service for pulmonary endarterectomy. The successful applicant will be involved in all of these unit activities as well as the unit teaching program and will be expected to take part in unit research activities.
