The Alfred Hospital Intensive Care Unit is a state of the art 68 bed unit that treats approximately 4000 patients per year. The Alfred ICU provides Victorian state services for heart and lung transplantation (including paediatric lung transplant), advanced heart failure and mechanical circulatory support including extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and impella, burns and hyperbaric medicine. The Alfred is one of two centres providing state services for trauma, HIV and bone marrow transplantation. In addition to the state services above The Alfred Hospital is a quaternary referral centre for a wide range of complex medical and surgical subspecialties.
The ECMO fellow role is an advanced training position within the ICU designed to develop expertise in the provision of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) for critically ill patients. It will include exposure and supervised hands on experience in all aspects of ECLS care including selection of suitable patients for ECLS (VV, VA and ECPR), ECMO cannulation and initiation of support, as well as maintenance of patients on ECMO and other mechanical circulatory support devices eg VAD, Impella.
The ECMO fellow will be involved in the pre-hospital ECPR service and the state based ECMO retrieval service.

The weighting of the involvement can be individualised allowing for comprehensive involvement in the ECMO service.
The ECMO fellow will be required to meet a small fraction of general ICU clinical duties.
Candidates applying for the role will have completed their transition year (TY) and be eligible for FCICM or equivalent intensive care fellowship.
Ideally candidates will have demonstrated interest and experience in ECLS. Strong communication, teamwork and organisational skills are highly desirable.
