Job Description

Your Contribution

As a Family Facilitator (FF) you will engage and work collaboratively with at risk families to assist them in identifying their needs using the Family Led Decision Making (FLDM) framework to ensure their children are safe. A Family Facilitator plays a vital role in providing support to families through culturally appropriate practices that effectively engage with traditional owners, elders and families across all communities. As part of this role, you will work closely with the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women. Building and maintaining a strong professional relationship with staff of the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women to ensure continued support for families.

Duties & Responsibilities

Case Management

  • Prepare for the initial engagement with families by reading the referral and carefully considering what resources may be required
  • Respectfully engage families by adopting appropriate cultural protocols
  • Explore existing family supports and kinship relationships
  • Ensure the perspectives of children and young people is valued and considered
  • Identify family strengths and stakeholders
  • Ensure families are aware of the department’s immediate safety concerns, including the concerns that are not negotiable
  • Develop and document safety plans with families
  • Assess all forms of risk and protective factors for preschool and aged children
  • Prepare families for planning meetings with the department
  • Complete referrals, in consultation with families
  • Provide culturally appropriate FLDM support to families across all points along the child protection continuum (e.g. safety planning, court processes, reunification, transitioning to independence etc)
  • Facilitate the engagement between families and the department across the child protection continuum
  • Facilitation of Family Group meetings
  • Prepare families for the FGM process
  • Ensure that all of the information is available to families
  • Facilitate a safe environment for families to engage

Administration

  • Record case notes of all work undertaken with families in the required timeframe
  • Record case notes/safety plans/cultural plans
  • Complete case summaries
  • To conduct regular reviews of all plans

Networking and Partnerships

  • Work collaboratively with the Family Wellbeing Service
  • Effectively engage with other service providers
  • Effectively engage with traditional owners, elders and families across all communities

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Hold a Current Blue Card (Queensland's Working with Children Check)
  • Ability to Pass a National Criminal History Check
  • Hold a Current Drivers Licence (QLD - C Class)
  • Proof of Qualification relevant to position is highly regarded (i.e. Certification IV Child, Youth and Family Intervention or willingness and commitment to completing Certificate IV level studies)
  • Ability to use MS Office suite
  • Experience in working with client information systems (experience in using ARC desirable)
  • Working understanding of FLDM model and adopting strengths-based practice
  • Ability to work within the QATSCIPP practice framework and standards
  • Knowledge of or the ability to acquire knowledge of the relevant government statutes governing statutory child protection work (i.e. Child Protection Act 1999) and the ability to keep current of the legislative, practice and procedural changes within the system
  • Ability to demonstrate strong capabilities around building relationships with and motivating vulnerable people, assessing needs, and advocating for the client
  • Ability to Work with vulnerable Young People and their families
  • Have an understanding of the historical, social, cultural, and economic issues effecting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and young people today
  • Highly developed communication skills with the ability to liaise, consult and negotiate positive outcomes in collaboration with clients, internal and external stakeholders.
