Family Engagement Coordinator (Literacy Focus)

  • Position Type: Part-Time (up to 30 hours / week)
  • Term: 3-Year Grant-Funded
  • Salary: $25/hr.
  • Scope: 5 District Schools (Grades K-12)

Position Summary

The Family Engagement Specialist is a 3-year, grant-funded position designed to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and home support across 5 district schools. The dual focus of this role is to provide immediate literacy support to families while establishing sustainable, repeatable engagement systems that school buildings can maintain independently after the grant concludes.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Sustainability & System Building
  • Design repeatable family engagement frameworks, communication templates, and workflows for school buildings.
  • Create accessible, long-term literacy toolkits and digital/physical resources for families.
  • Train school staff and parent volunteers to ensure continuity of literacy outreach efforts post-grant.
  1. Classroom & Staff Collaboration
  • Spend regular time in K-12 classrooms to deeply understand current literacy instructional programming.
  • Partner with teaching staff to translate classroom curricula into actionable at-home strategies for parents.
  • Attend building-level meetings, professional development, and literacy training to stay aligned with district goals.
  • Manage and balance weekly schedule allocations across 5 distinct school buildings.
  • Work collaboratively with other district, parent facing support staff
  1. Parent Support & Literacy Guidance
  • Educate parents on modern literacy instructional methods and student reading data.
  • Guide families through state legislative mandates, specifically Dyslexia Screenings and Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plans (RIMPs).
  • Facilitate workshops and community spaces that demystify student reading progress.

Qualifications

  • Systems Thinker: Ability to build processes, toolkits, and organizational structures from the ground up.
  • Strong Communicator: Capable of translating complex educational terminology and data into clear, accessible language for families.
  • Logistical Skills: Highly organized and self-directed; able to manage time and boundaries across multiple sites.
  • Adaptability: Eager to learn district literacy curricula and state mandates quickly.
  • Experience: Background in education, community outreach, social work, or family advocacy preferred.
  • Preference given to current parents of Piqua City Schools or retirees

The Montgomery County Educational Service Center provides a robust array of educational services to 16 public school districts in Montgomery County and over 90 educational entities in multiple counties across the Greater Dayton region. The MCESC is supported by over 600 employees and interacts directly with over 800 employees in partner educational institutions.

The MCESC operates two remote learning centers and an annex providing occupational and physical therapy services directly to school districts and families throughout the community. In addition, the MCESC provides outreach to schools and families with speech and hearing pathologists.
