Job Description

DNV Energy Systems’ Incident Investigation Section is seeking a curious, technically strong Failure Analysis / Materials Engineer to help uncover why critical materials and components fail then translate those findings into insights that improve safety, reliability, and performance. This role is ideal for someone with expertise in one or more of the following areas: metallurgy, mechanical or materials engineering, welding engineering, fractography, metallography, mechanical testing, nondestructive testing, light microscopy, and electron microscopy.

This position is located in our Dublin, Ohio office. Further details regarding role-specific requirements will be shared during the interview process.

What You’ll Do

  • Respond to pipeline incidents, leaks, ruptures, and integrity-related events by conducting on-site failure investigations.
  • Collaborate with operators, regulators, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams during field investigations and incident response activities.
  • Support experienced engineers in executing and managing small to mid-sized failure analysis projects, including proposal development, data review, and reporting
  • Collaborate with local and global teams.
  • Learn from DNV’s national and international subject matter experts to build industry-based forensic materials expertise.

What’s Required

  • Master’s degree or higher in metallurgical or materials science engineering, with a demonstrated focus on metals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Genuine interest in analyzing evidence to identify material and metallurgical causes of failure.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.
  • Proficient using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
  • Willingness to travel for assignments ranging from several days to several weeks, depending on the investigation.
  • Self-motivation, independence, and sound judgment in seeking subject matter expertise when needed.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written English communication and presentation abilities.
  • We conduct pre-employment drug and background screening

What is Preferred

  • Experience using finite element software packages and laser scanning tools.
  • Experience with or knowledge of transmission pipelines and other pressurized equipment.
  • Knowledge of pressure vessel design codes and material specifications for pressurized equipment, including ASME and API standards.
  • Knowledge of carbon steels.
  • Experience using AI-enabled productivity tools, such as Microsoft Copilot.
  • Relevant internship experience.
