Job Description

The Division of Environment and Sustainability at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is seeking applicants for substantiation-track faculty positions at all ranks (Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor) in the field of Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services, and Nature-based Solutions We invite candidates whose scholarly interests intersect with multiple areas of sustainability and sustainable development.

The successful candidates will play a crucial role in advancing the University’s sustainability education strategy by providing leadership, energy, and vision to a well-balanced and multi-disciplinary approach to understanding key concepts, principles, theories, and practices related to biodiversity and ecosystem services. Candidates are expected to develop or contribute to an internationally recognized research program that emphasizes collaborative research aimed at addressing complex global challenges, including biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, climate change impacts, and the sustainable management of natural resources/nature-based solutions.

Candidates should have a strong understanding of experiential “hands-on” learning as a means of instruction for students, and an exemplary teaching record. Successful applicants will be expected to participate in or lead collaborative interdisciplinary research teams focused on biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services assessment, and the integration of ecological models into decision-making processes under the Division’s three research themes:

  • Air and Health
  • Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CARE)
  • Sustainable Finance and Net Zero Solutions

The Division of Environment and Sustainability is an interdisciplinary academic unit dedicated to the use and management of natural resources in an economically efficient, environmentally compatible, and socially responsible manner. Our faculty members publish broadly in both disciplinary journals and diverse, environmentally focused outlets, and are rewarded for working on interdisciplinary teams in applied contexts. Depending on the candidate’s areas of expertise, a joint appointment between the Division of Environment and Sustainability and a relevant academic Department/Division may be possible.

Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in ecology, environmental science, biology, or a related interdisciplinary field with a focus on biodiversity, ecosystem services or nature-based solutions.
  • Proven teaching and advising experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • A strong research and publication record consistent with the candidate’s academic rank, along with evidence of potential for securing research funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams, engaging both social and natural scientists.
