
The Division of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications for an open-rank (Assistant Professor / Associate Professor / Professor) substantiation-track position in Art History, with an expected starting date of 2 July 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. While the preference is to hire at the Assistant Professor level, exceptional candidates at the Associate Professor and Professor level will be considered.
The position is for a scholar of East Asian art, expertise in China is especially welcome. The ideal candidate would possess research interests in traditional media (including but not limited to painting, sculpture, architecture, or photography) as well as the ability to apply new methodologies to their study. Successful candidates are expected to be able to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in contemporary multimedia art, surveys of East Asian art and media, and specialized courses.
Starting salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave and medical/dental benefits will be provided. Housing benefits will also be provided where applicatble. Initial appointment at Assistant Professor rank will normally be on a three-year contract, renewable subject to mutual agreement. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
Applicants should either have or will receive a PhD degree in Art History (or related field) by August 2026. The successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to excellence in research and teaching as well as a strong publication record appropriate to career stage. For applicants at the level of Associate Proressor or Professor, a record of obtaining competitive external funding will be a plus.
