The Facility and Operations Technician will support the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and technical functions of Ohio State’s Battery Cell Research and Demonstration Center. This Center is managed and operated by Ohio State’s Institute for Materials and Manufacturing Research (IMR) within the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge (ERIK). Reporting to the Facility and Operations Manager, this position plays a hands-on role in ensuring the reliability and readiness of facility systems, equipment, and manufacturing assets. The Technician will assist with equipment installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, inventory control, and safe operations within the Center. This role directly supports research, development, demonstration, and training activities involving advanced battery materials, electrode fabrication, cell assembly, characterization, and testing.

The Facility and Operations Technician ensures that the Battery Cell Research and Demonstration Center operates safely, efficiently, and reliably. This role is essential to enabling research, training, and collaboration across academia, industry, and government partners.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of experience working with technical equipment in a laboratory, manufacturing, or pilot-scale production environment.
  • Hands-on experience with equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, or calibration.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, or electromechanical systems and safe operating practices.
  • Familiarity with industrial or research safety procedures, including chemical handling, PPE use, hazard identification, and lockout/tagout.
  • Comfortable and experienced in working at heights, including inspecting and maintaining rooftop equipment (exhaust fans, chillers, etc.)
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and operating procedures.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to be proactive and work independently, manage multiple tasks, and adapt to evolving project needs.
  • This position requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. Due to ITAR regulations, only candidates who are U. S. Persons (U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents, or individuals granted asylum or refugee status) will be considered for this position.

Desired Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in engineering technology, mechanical/electrical technology, industrial systems, or related technical field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience in battery materials, electrode processing, cell assembly, or advanced materials manufacturing.
  • Experience in working with compressed gas cylinders (argon, hydrogen, nitrogen)
  • Experience working in dry room, cleanroom, or controlled-environment facilities.
  • Experience maintaining pilot-scale or industrial machinery (mixers, coaters, vacuum systems, pumps, mechanical and electrical systems).
  • Certification or formal training in maintenance, safety, or industrial systems.
  • Experience supporting collaborative research and development environments involving academic and industry partners.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, or quality control systems.

Additional Information:

Salary

The hourly pay range for this job profile is $22.93-$29.95. The offered rate for this position will fall within this range based on the candidate's qualifications, internal equity, and the unit's available budget.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to safely access rooftop equipment regularly, which may involve climbing ladders, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Additional Information

This is a fully in-person position. While regular working hours are expected, overtime may be necessary to ensure timely resolutions and maintain operational efficiency when emergencies involving equipment or facility malfunctions occur.
