This Parks Maintenance Technician will act under the Island Grove Division of CPRD and is responsible for maintaining all planting beds and grounds spaces at Island Grove. This role performs general upkeep and cleaning of park facilities, public rights-of-way, and medians.
Experience, Education, and Skills:
Minimum Requirements:
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Experience using a truck plow, hand shovel, snow blower, poly cord trimmer, and gas-powered water pump.
· Intermediate knowledge of horticulture and specific landscape maintenance practices.
· Experience transplanting trees and shrubs by hand.
· Knowledge of and ability to recognize shrub and perennial species in all seasons and to diagnose common insect and disease issues of landscape plants.
OR
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job,
AND
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Preferred:
· One (1) year of grounds maintenance experience.
· Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Ability to use required safety equipment and take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and general public.
· Experience handling difficult situations using tact, patience, and good judgment.
· Experience operating motorized equipment and a variety of hand and power tools.
Essential Functions:
· Plant, mulch, weed, prune, water, apply chemicals and pick up trash out of landscape beds.
· Provide a consistent maintenance program which helps to improve our overall appearance and image for the entire city.
· Ensure grounds and green spaces are waters via irrigation systems including inground, manual sprinklers, and hand watering. Make minor to moderate irrigation repairs.
· Use all required safety equipment and take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents.
· Assists with data collection for performance measures to monitor Forestry "Quality Index” ratings.
· For the safe travel of the public, this position includes assigned snow removal routes and duties; a truck plow, hand shovel or snow blower are used.
· Assists in the planning and execution of historic garden and landscaping plans.
· Knowledge of the use of a truck, plow, hand shovel, and snow blower.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None.
Travel:
Approximately 10% flexible, local travel required.
Work Environment:
· Work outside with exposure to all weather elements.
· Exposure to amplified sound equipment.
· Exposure to chemicals for weed and grass control.
· Exposure to variety of hazards such as vegetation that can cause punctures, biting insects, wildlife, off-leash dogs, etc.
· Hours may be flexible depending on assigned area, 20-40 hours per week, with weekends and holidays as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
· Manual labor, prolonged standing, kneeling, bending and walking, climbing ladders and stairs.
· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis.
· Ability to lift arm above shoulder level and to move objects.
· Manual dexterity to operate hand and power tools.
· Vision to perform listed functions and to read printed instructions.
