POSITION SUMMARY:
The Facilities Engineer is a technical engineering role responsible for the reliability, optimization, troubleshooting, and improvement of building services, plant utilities, and facility infrastructure supporting Injection Molding, Thermoforming, Printing, and Warehouse operations.
The position provides hands-on engineering expertise to evaluate existing systems, develop and implement technical solutions, and lead facility engineering and capital projects from concept through commissioning and close-out.
The role focuses on technical engineering, infrastructure reliability, and project execution, working closely with Plant Maintenance, Engineering, EHS, operations, contractors, consultants, and suppliers.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITES:
A. Building Services Engineering
• Evaluate the performance, condition, capacity, and reliability of existing plant utility and service systems.
• Develop engineering solutions to address capacity limitations, reliability issues, energy consumption, obsolescence, and infrastructure deficiencies.
• Perform or coordinate engineering calculations, technical assessments, system evaluations, and feasibility studies.
• Review existing systems and determine appropriate modifications, upgrades, replacements, or expansions.
• Develop technical concepts and engineering recommendations based on operational requirements, applicable codes, standards, and best engineering practices.
• Troubleshoot complex building utility and infrastructure problems and determine root causes.
• Evaluate system capacity and loading requirements for existing and future plant needs.
• Develop technical scopes of work, specifications, drawings, and documentation for facility engineering projects.
• Review engineering designs and contractor proposals to ensure technical requirements are satisfied.
• Support commissioning and performance verification of new or modified building systems.
B. Building Utilities & Services
Provide technical engineering support for the following systems, as applicable to the facility:
• Electrical distribution and power systems
• HVAC and building environmental systems
• Chilled water systems
• Domestic and process-related water systems
• Compressed air systems
• Plumbing and drainage systems
• Building Automation Systems (BAS)
• Fire protection and life-safety systems
• Building structures and envelope
• Facility-related utility distribution systems
• Site and ground infrastructure
The Facilities Engineer shall develop sufficient technical understanding of these systems to evaluate their performance, identify deficiencies, troubleshoot problems, and develop improvement solutions.
C. Building Automation Systems (BAS)
• Monitor and analyze BAS system operation and trends.
• Troubleshoot BAS-related issues and identify opportunities for improved system performance.
• Evaluate HVAC and other building systems through BAS data and system trends.
• Develop and implement improvements to controls, sequences of operation, scheduling, and system performance.
• Coordinate BAS modifications with controls contractors and service providers.
• Ensure BAS documentation and sequences of operation are maintained and updated.
• Utilize BAS data to support energy optimization and facility troubleshooting.
D. AutoCAD & Engineering Documentation
• Maintain and update facility drawings, layouts, utility plans, and engineering documentation.
• Use AutoCAD at a strong working level to develop and modify facility layouts and engineering drawings.
• Review architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural, and utility drawings.
• Develop or coordinate drawings required for facility modifications and projects.
• Maintain accurate documentation of existing facility infrastructure and utility systems.
• Identify discrepancies between existing conditions and available drawings and coordinate updates as required.
E. Project Engineering & Project Management
The Facilities Engineer is expected to take ownership of assigned projects from concept through completion.
Responsibilities include:
• Identify project requirements and develop technical solutions.
• Evaluate existing infrastructure and determine appropriate engineering approaches.
• Develop project scope, technical specifications, preliminary designs, and cost estimates.
• Prepare project budgets and capital expenditure requests.
• Obtain and evaluate contractor and supplier proposals.
• Coordinate engineering consultants, contractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain project schedules and milestones.
• Use Microsoft Project or equivalent project-management tools to develop and maintain project schedules and Gantt charts.
• Coordinate engineering, procurement, construction, installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
• Monitor project cost, schedule, quality, scope, and technical performance.
• Conduct project meetings and coordinate actions required to maintain progress.
• Identify and communicate technical, schedule, cost, and operational risks.
• Proactively resolve project issues and coordinate corrective actions.
• Ensure projects are executed with minimal disruption to plant operations.
• Verify that completed work meets design requirements and project objectives.
• Coordinate commissioning, testing, documentation, and project close-out.
• Ensure drawings, manuals, warranties, operating procedures, and other technical documentation are completed and transferred to Facilities.
Project ownership is a core expectation of this position. The Facilities Engineer is expected to lead assigned projects rather than function primarily as an administrative coordinator.
F. Capital Planning & Infrastructure Development
• Evaluate facility infrastructure requirements associated with plant expansions, new equipment, process changes, and increased utility demand.
• Perform preliminary engineering assessments for proposed projects.
• Determine utility capacity requirements and identify infrastructure limitations.
• Develop technical recommendations for infrastructure upgrades and expansions.
• Prepare capital project estimates and supporting technical documentation.
• Support long-term facility infrastructure planning.
• Identify aging, obsolete, undersized, or high-risk infrastructure and develop replacement strategies.
G. Energy & Utility Optimization
• Analyze energy and utility consumption and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Evaluate the technical feasibility of energy-efficiency initiatives.
• Develop and implement utility optimization projects.
• Use BAS and utility data to identify abnormal system performance and energy losses.
• Evaluate compressed air, HVAC, chilled water, electrical, and other utility systems for efficiency improvements.
• Support energy audits, sustainability initiatives, GHG-reduction projects, and available incentive programs.
H. Reliability, Troubleshooting & Continuous Improvement
• Investigate recurring facility and utility failures using structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
• Develop permanent technical solutions rather than relying on temporary corrective actions.
• Evaluate system reliability and identify single points of failure.
• Develop recommendations to improve system redundancy, maintainability, and operational resilience.
• Analyze operating data and system performance to identify improvement opportunities.
• Support development of preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for facility infrastructure.
• Provide technical support to Facilities and Plant Maintenance personnel when facility infrastructure issues affect plant operations.
I. Contractor & Engineering Consultant Management
• Develop technical scopes of work and specifications for contractors and consultants.
• Prepare and issue RFQs in accordance with project requirements.
• Technically evaluate contractor and consultant proposals.
• Coordinate contractors, engineering consultants, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
• Review contractor drawings, submittals, calculations, and technical documentation.
• Monitor field installation to ensure compliance with approved designs and specifications.
• Identify deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions.
• Ensure proper testing, commissioning, documentation, and project close-out.
J. Compliance, Safety & Engineering Standards
• Ensure facility engineering activities comply with applicable building, electrical, fire, environmental, safety, and regulatory requirements.
• Apply applicable engineering codes, standards, and industry best practices when developing technical solutions.
• Coordinate required inspections, testing, permits, and certifications.
• Identify facility infrastructure risks and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
• Ensure contractor activities comply with site safety requirements.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• Bachelor's degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Facilities Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Demonstrated experience in building services engineering, facilities engineering, industrial utilities, or building infrastructure.
• Strong hands-on technical experience evaluating and troubleshooting existing building utility systems.
• Strong AutoCAD skills, including the ability to create and modify facility engineering drawings and layouts.
• Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS), including system monitoring, troubleshooting, trending, and optimization.
• Strong understanding of building utilities and services, including HVAC, electrical distribution, compressed air, chilled water, plumbing, and related systems.
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate existing infrastructure and develop practical technical solutions.
• Experience managing and coordinating engineering or facility infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated ability to take ownership of projects from concept through implementation and commissioning.
• Ability to read and interpret architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural, and engineering drawings.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
