Qualifications
- NVQ Level in Maintenance Operations, plumbing, electrics, joinery/carpentry, painting & decorating or similar qualification would be an advantage
Experience
- Experience of managing third-party contractors
- Experience in working with complex mechanical, electrical & plumbing systems
- Experience in completing planned preventative maintenance for hard & soft services
- Experience of working in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment
- Experience in a similar field e.g. school, university or charity
Skills

Knowledge

- Thorough understanding of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety)
- Working knowledge of a CAFM system (Concept Evolution, TABS FM etc.)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Project, Excel & PowerPoint
- Awareness of sustainability & energy efficiency practices

The position
In the heart of London’s Knowledge Quarter, the Aga Khan Centre (AKC) is a place for education, knowledge, cultural exchange and insight into Muslim Civilisations and is home to three organisations founded by His Highness the Aga Khan, The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS), the Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) and the Aga Khan Foundation United Kingdom (AKF(UK)).
The Maintenance and Facilities Operative is responsible for providing efficient and effective facility and maintenance support to the Aga Khan Centre including ensuring the security and general appearance of the building and surrounding areas are maintained in accordance with the required standards.
The post holder is expected to observe safe working practices in carrying out the required duties and ensure that instructions specified by the Facilities and Operations Manager, Head of King’s Cross Properties, Assistant Facilities and Maintenance Manager, technical consultants, contractors and manufacturers are adhered to.
The post is full-time, based on a 35-hour working week. The team operates Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 8:00pm, working 8-hour shifts (including a 1-hour unpaid break). This role will typically work a 12:00pm to 8:00pm shift; however, flexibility is required to cover alternative hours as needed to support service demands and ensure continuous operational coverage.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AKC Building Operations
- Carry out basic electrical checks and repairs such as changing plugs, fuses and components.
- Carry out basic plumbing repairs including unblocking sinks/toilets, repairing leaks and replacing sanitary fittings.
- Undertake minor furniture repairs, fixture installations and office reconfigurations.
- Monitor Building Management Systems (BMS) and report faults.
- Record and submit meter readings for the Aga Khan Centre and any tenants, ensuring accuracy.
- Assist Events, Security, IT and other teams as necessary (e.g. furniture moving, stage erecting/dismantling, cable tracing/replacing).
- Monitor & Update the CAFM system with details of all completed jobs in a timely manner.
- Undertake porterage duties that involve moving numerous, general, heavy, bulky items over some distance, with the aid of lifting equipment as appropriate
AKC Health & Safety and Compliance
- Plan, organise, schedule and complete Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) tasks
- Undertake daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, bi-annual and annual Health & Safety and Compliance Checks
- Comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act, prescribed Health and Safety policy, other relevant legislation and Building Policies
- Ensure ladders and working at height equipment are maintained and inspected for compliance and safe use
- Assist with maintaining statutory compliance records (fire alarm, emergency lighting, water hygiene, lift inspections, etc)
- Report accidents, incidents and near misses to the Facilities and Operations Manager or Head of King’s Cross Properties
- Report security risks or breaches to the Facilities and Operations Manager or Head of King’s Cross Properties
AKC Emergency and Incident Response
- Report all emergencies to the Facilities and Operations Manager or Head of King’s Cross Properties or follow emergency protocols when they are unavailable.
- Work flexibly in terms of working hours to support incidents outside of regular working hours.
- Isolate utilities (water and electric) in emergency situations where safe and authorised to do so.
- Provide support during adverse weather events (eg. gritting, snow clearance).
AKC Customer Service & Communication
- Provide a professional and courteous service to staff, students, visitors and contractors.
- Demonstrate professional standards of conduct and communication at all times, ensuring all interactions align with AKF (UK) values, behaviours and service standards.
