The Extrusion Technician II is responsible for all aspects of a polymer extrusion line used to create tubing for production and R&D.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for maintaining all aspects of the polymer extrusion line(s) assigned, including but not limited to: set-up and tear down, troubleshooting, equipment maintenance, and workflow.
  • Work with production personnel and R&D to ensure extruded tubing meets requirements and make the proper adjustments as required.
  • Provide extrusions in a timely manner as directed by the department supervisor to ensure production and R&D schedules are met.
  • Manage raw extrusion materials in a way that ensures traceability and prevents contamination.
  • Generate documentation on the extrusion of the lots that is used to control traceability and ensure reproducibility.
  • Follow established procedures to maintain a clean and organized environment.
  • Other assignments as assigned by the direct supervisor.

Requirements

Education / Certifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Job Requirements

  • 1 to 5 years’ experience in hands-on extrusion of medical-grade tubing.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a Medical Device manufacturing environment.
  • Must possess good organizational skills.
  • Must be proactive and show initiative in taking on and completing extrusion projects.
  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understand the calculations used for Area Draw Ratio (ADR), Direct Draw Ratio (DDR), and Draw Ratio Balance (DRB, also known as Draw Down Balance or DDB), and how it applies to single lumen tubing made from various materials.
  • Ability to select tooling for single lumen tubes made from various materials based on the calculations for ADR/DDR/DRB and past historical processing information.
  • Understand the general principles of open tank sizing, vacuum sizing (contact/non-contact), tube on coatings, and pressure coatings of substrates.
  • Know common terms for various materials (PA, PUR, POM, EVA, etc.)
  • Ability to execute existing complex processes, such as (including but not exclusive to) multi-lumen, taper tubing, or co-extrusions.
  • Basic understanding of the effects that viscosity and velocity have on profiles and multi-lumen extrusions, and the general concepts used in tool design to counteract these effects.
  • Basic understanding of the effects that residual moisture has on material viscosity and resin degradation in the process.
  • Understand the basic relationships of the process instrumentation to the observed effects on the process.
